Hadith 5831

Narrated Ibn Abi Laila: While Hudhaifa was at Al-Madain, he asked for water whereupon the chief of the village brought him water in a silver cup. Hudhaifa threw it at him and said, "I have thrown it only because I have forbidden him to use it, but he does not stop using it. Allah's Apostle said, 'Gold, silver, silk and Dibaj (a kind of silk) are for them (unbelievers) in this world and for you (Muslims) in the hereafter.'

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The meaning of sitting on silk is that its cushion, mattress, or bedding is made, and then it is used. Although some scholars have a lenient view regarding this, according to our inclination, the use of such items is also not permissible.
(2)
Since a woman is a bed and garment for a man, if a woman's bedding is of silk or she is wearing silk clothing, then it is permissible to have intercourse with her on such bedding, although it is better to avoid it because this is what asceticism and piety demand.

Hadith Commentary:
It is absolutely forbidden (haram) for Muslims to eat or drink from vessels made of silver or gold. However, most people have become heedless and have begun to use such forbidden items boastfully, without fearing Allah, even though the outcome of such actions is evil: after death, in the Hereafter, this wealth will appear before them as a burning coal from Hell.
Therefore, it is necessary for such wealthy individuals to immediately refrain from such actions.
In the narration, the city of Madain is mentioned, which was situated on the banks of the Tigris River, at a distance of seven farsakhs from Baghdad.
It was the capital city of the kings of Iran, and the famous palace of Khosrow (Iwan Kisra) was located there. It was conquered during the caliphate of Umar radi Allahu anhu by Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas radi Allahu anhu.
The word “dihqan” can be pronounced with either a kasrah or a dammah on the letter dal.
In Iran, this word was used for the chief of a village.
Later, by way of idiom, it began to be used for rural areas in general.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The city of Mada'in was situated on the banks of the Tigris River, at a distance of seven farsakh (parasang) from Baghdad. The palace of Kisra (Chosroes) was located there. It was conquered by Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas radi Allahu anhu during the caliphate of Umar radi Allahu anhu.

(2)
From this hadith, it is understood that eating and drinking from gold and silver vessels is the custom of the disbelievers. Muslims have been prohibited from adopting the customs of the disbelievers; however, gold jewelry is permissible for women. For men, only silver is allowed, but gold and silver vessels are forbidden for both men and women. Whoever abstains in this world from things prohibited by Allah ta'ala will be granted special blessings in Paradise.

Hadith Commentary:
It is understood that in this world, the disbelievers present food and drink to the wealthy in vessels of gold and silver with great pride and arrogance; therefore, Muslims have been commanded to refrain from this.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
It is absolutely forbidden (haram) for Muslims to eat or drink from vessels made of silver and gold. However, disbelievers (kuffar) in this world use gold and silver vessels with great pride and arrogance, and present food and drink in them before the wealthy. Muslims have been prohibited from eating and drinking in such vessels.

(2)
The prohibition is not solely because disbelievers use them, but also because their use causes distress to the poor and needy, and it is a sign of arrogance and pride. In addition, their use involves extravagance (israf). And Allah knows best.

Explanation:

That is, I had already prohibited him from using these vessels, but when, despite being forbidden, he did not refrain, only then did I throw this water on his face so that he would be mindful of it in the future.

For men, only silver is permissible.
Whereas gold and silk are forbidden.

And as for women, some people consider it permissible,
while others consider it forbidden.

Benefits and Issues:

➊ Wearing garments made of pure silk, making handkerchiefs from it, or using it for bedding and then sitting or lying on it—all of these are prohibited (haram) for men.

➋ Gold jewelry is also prohibited (haram) for men, whether it is a necklace, a chain for a ring, buttons for clothing, or any other ornament—the ruling is the same for all. However, it is not sinful for a man to own gold as long as he does not wear it.

➌ Abstaining from prohibited things in this world in obedience to Allah’s command is a great virtue, the reward for which is that in Paradise, one will receive similar blessings that are far superior to the blessings of this world.

➍ It is necessary to maintain distinction from non-Muslims in ways of living and in the design of clothing and similar matters.
