Hadith Commentary:
The narration of Jabalah bin Suhaim has been connected (mawsul) by Imam al-Nasa’i, and the narration of Zayd bin Aslam has been connected by Imam Muslim.
The narration of Musa is itself connected in this very book at the beginning of the Book of Clothing (Kitab al-Libas), and that of ‘Umar bin Muhammad is connected in Sahih Muslim, and that of Qudamah is connected in Sahih Abu ‘Awanah.
Whether it is an izar (tahmad) or a shirt (qamis), whoever lets it hang out of arrogance will certainly receive this punishment. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has spoken the truth.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam once said to Sufyan bin Sahl radi Allahu anhu:
“O Sufyan! Do not let your garment hang lower than the permissible limit, for Allah does not like those who let their garments hang in such a manner.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Kitab al-Libas, Hadith: 3574)
When the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam gave this warning, Umm Salamah radi Allahu anha asked: “What should women do with their hems?”
He replied: “They should let it hang a handspan.”
She said: “In that case, their feet will be exposed.”
He said: “Then let it hang a forearm’s length, but do not let it hang more than that.”
(Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Kitab al-Libas, Hadith: 1731)
(2)
From this it is understood that those women who drag several yards of cloth behind them as they walk—especially on occasions such as weddings—are also included in this warning.
By adopting Western culture, this evil custom has spread among our women that brides, on the occasion of marriage, wear a gharara several yards long which drags behind them; then the lehnga is so long that several women have to hold it up, and they walk along with her.
These women, obsessed with ostentation and display, will also be deprived of Allah’s mercy.
A woman is not obligated, like men, to keep her ankles uncovered; rather, she should keep her feet concealed, but she should not let her garment hang more than a forearm’s length.
According to our inclination, it is better that she let it hang only a handspan; if, by doing so, her feet remain exposed, then she may let it hang two handspans.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
It is understood from "Innamal a‘maalu bin-niyyat" (Actions are only by intentions) that if someone keeps his lower garment (izar) above the ankles but does so out of arrogance, then his destruction is certain.
If, without intention and without the purpose of arrogance, the garment hangs down, then he will not be included in this warning.
This applies to every type of clothing.
Whether it is an izar, pajama, or making the sleeves of a shirt excessively large—if one does so out of arrogance, then it is a grave sin and forbidden (haram).
In today's era, those who wear trousers in such a manner out of pride and arrogance are also included in this warning.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
In one narration, it is mentioned that the narrator of the hadith, Muharib, was asked whether he had mentioned the izar (lower garment), to which he replied that he had not specified the sheet or the shirt, but had mentioned clothing in general.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Dress, Hadith: 5791)
However, in the hadith narrated from Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu, the izar is specifically mentioned.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Dress, Hadith: 5788)
➋
In the hadith, "one corner" refers to the back side, because when the buttocks are large, the back edge of the sheet stays in place, but when the buttocks are small and light, the sheet cannot stay where a person wants to tie and hold it; rather, it slips down from that place.
Since Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu had a thin and lean body, and there was also some curvature in his back, despite his efforts, sometimes his sheet would fall below his ankles. For this reason, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam made an exception for him.
From this, the front side of the sheet could also be meant, because if the belly is protruding, it is not possible for the sheet to stay in its place.
In some narrations, it is mentioned about him that his belly was protruding, but this is contrary to what is well-known; the first explanation is more plausible.
➌
In this hadith, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam testified regarding Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu that he did not commit any act that is reprehensible in the Shariah; in such circumstances, a person does not fall under the severe warning.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Letting one's garment hang below the ankles is blameworthy, whether it is done out of habit or out of arrogance. The hadith mentions separate punishments for both cases. Thus, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Whatever garment hangs below the ankles is in the Fire, and whoever drags his lower garment out of arrogance, Allah the Exalted will not look at him with mercy." (Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab al-Libas, Hadith: 4093)
(2)
If someone has an excuse, such as having a large belly or a hunched back, and despite trying, sometimes the sheet slips below the ankles—as has been mentioned in the above hadith regarding Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (radi Allahu anhu)—then in such a case, if the garment goes below the ankles, there is no blame. However, to adopt this habitually is an extremely disliked act.
(3)
It should be clear that the garment which is in the Fire will also drag its wearer along with it.
And Allah is the One whose help is sought.

Hadith Commentary:
Extravagance in clothing is when one wastes fabric without benefit, such as wrapping turbans from entire bolts of cloth. From this, it is also evident that arrogance and pride play a major role in letting garments trail. This is a very bad habit. No matter how many good deeds a person may have, if accompanied by arrogance and pride, he will not attain salvation. Conversely, even if a person has many sins, if he possesses humility and modesty, there is hope for forgiveness.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Dragging one's garment while walking is extremely reprehensible.
This includes the sheet, shirt, trousers, cloak, coat, and turban, etc.
The noble statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is:
“Letting the garment hang below the limit is prohibited for the waist-wrapper (izar), shirt (qamis), and turban (imamah), all of them.” (Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab al-Libas, Hadith: 4094)
This is extravagance and has been considered a sign of arrogance, as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to a man:
“Avoid letting your garment hang below the ankles, for this is a sign of arrogance, and Allah does not like arrogance.” (Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab al-Libas, Hadith: 4084)
However, women are permitted to let their garments hang below the ankles.
(2)
It is as if there is also an aspect of femininity in this manner, which does not befit men.
Men should express masculine qualities in their clothing, one of which is that the waist-wrapper (izar) and trousers, etc., should be above the ankles.
Further clarification of this will follow.
In any case, Muslims should avoid extravagance and arrogance in their clothing.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
Khuyaa’ (خيلاء):
Self-conceit;
a person considering himself to be something and boasting over some imagined virtue of his.
Benefits and Issues:
This hadith establishes that letting the lower garment, shalwar,
pajama,
shirt, etc., hang below the ankles, when done out of arrogance,
pride, and self-conceit,
is forbidden (haram).
However, if someone lets it hang without arrogance or pride,
then it is contrary to Islamic etiquette,
which is why in some narrations it has been declared disliked (makruh) even without the condition of arrogance,
as is narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari from Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that: “Whatever part of the lower garment is below the ankles will be in the Fire (of Hell).”
Arrogance or self-conceit is a hidden matter, and letting the garment hang is its trial and locus,
therefore letting the garment hang will be considered equivalent to arrogance and self-conceit,
just as the cause of shortening the prayer (qasr) during travel is hardship,
but since this is a hidden matter,
travel itself is made the reason for qasr and breaking the fast,
so if someone deliberately lets his garment hang and says,
‘I do not do this out of arrogance,’ then his statement will not be accepted,
however, if it happens unintentionally or by coincidence, then there is no blame upon him,
for this reason the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“Beware of trailing the lower garment,
for trailing the lower garment is from self-conceit (khuyaa’).”

Explanation:
1:
From this hadith, it is understood that regarding the lowering of garments, there are separate rulings for men and women.
For men, letting the garment hang to the middle of the shin is preferable.
However, it is permissible to keep it up to the ankles.
But it is extremely necessary to keep the ankles exposed.
In contrast, women must cover not only the ankles but also the feet,
especially when they go outside, they should be careful that no non-mahram (unmarriageable man) sees their feet.

Explanation:
1:
It is as if, without arrogance, if the lower garment (tehband) unintentionally hangs below (the ankles), there is no harm in it.
But to intentionally and deliberately wear it below (the ankles), and to consider the punishment mentioned in the hadith as insignificant, this is a grave offense.
Because dragging one's garment while walking is a sign of arrogance,
which is manifested through clothing.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ If, while sitting or engaged in work, the waistcloth (tehband), trousers (shalwar), or similar garment becomes loose and slips below the ankles, this is not considered among the arrogance (takabbur) mentioned in the above hadith.
➋ The noble Companions (Sahabah kiram), in the light of the Prophetic teachings, were extremely sensitive that they should not, at any time, fall into any opposition (to the Sunnah). For this reason, even Abu Bakr as-Siddiq radi Allahu anhu sought clarification. Through this, comfort was attained for him and for other Muslims, and the severity was alleviated. However, to take the final sentence as a proof for oneself in every situation is in no way permissible, as has been clarified above.

The restriction of arrogance (takabbur) mentioned in these ahadith is incidental, because in another hadith it is explicitly stated that letting (the garment) hang itself is arrogance (takabbur).

(1) “One span” means one span below the middle of the shin; only then will the feet be uncovered. If it is one span below the ankles, then the feet will be covered. “One hand” also refers to one hand’s length below the middle of the shin. In this case, the hem will begin to drag on the ground, and the feet will also not be uncovered, even if the woman is walking.
(2) “Be uncovered” — it is as if it is preferable for women that their feet not be uncovered; however, it is not obligatory to cover the feet, because the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam only made it necessary to go one span below.
(3) “One hand” — in Arabic, the word “dhira’” is used, meaning the distance from the edge of the elbow bone to the tip of the middle finger. In Arabic, this distance is called a dhira’. In Urdu, it is referred to as a “hand.”

Benefits and Issues:
➊
Dragging the garment means that the garment is so long that it is dragged on the ground or touches the ground.
➋
For all garments such as the waistcloth (tehband), shalwar, trousers, pajama, and the Arabic shirt (qamees) that reaches the feet, the permissible limit for men is that the garment should remain above the ankles.
And the best is that it should remain up to the middle of the shin.
➌
Letting the garment hang below the permissible limit is a major sin (kabirah).
➍
Some people say that they do not let their garment hang out of arrogance; their excuse is not valid because the Prophetic instruction (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is:
“Avoid letting the waistcloth hang (below the ankles), for that is arrogance, and Allah does not like arrogance.” (Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab al-Libas, Chapter: What has been reported regarding letting the izar hang, Hadith: 4084)

Vocabulary:
«الخيلاء» Takabbur (arrogance) is a verbal noun. Horses are called «خيل» because there is arrogance in their gait.
Benefits:
“Will not look at him”
means that Allah will not look at him with mercy and love. Because nothing can be hidden from Allah’s sight, the reason is that a humble, poor person is deserving of a merciful gaze, while the arrogant and proud is deprived of it and instead becomes deserving of a gaze of wrath. The Divine statement is:
«إِنَّ اللَّـهَ لَا يُحِبُّ مَن كَانَ مُخْتَالًا فَخُورًا» [4-النساء : 36]
“Indeed, Allah does not like every arrogant boaster.”
Abu Dharr al-Ghifari radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
«ثلاثة لا يكلمهم الله يوم القيامة ولا يزكيهم ولهم عذاب اليم المسبل والمنان والمنفق سلعته بالحلف الكاذب» [مسلم 71/1]
“There are three people with whom Allah will not speak on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and for them is a painful punishment: the one who lets his garment hang (below the ankles), the one who reminds others of his favors, and the one who sells his goods by means of a false oath.”
➋ This warning regarding letting the garment hang applies to both women and men. Umm Salamah radi Allahu anha understood this from the hadith, so in the narration of Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma in Tirmidhi and Nasa’i, these words are also present: Umm Salamah radi Allahu anha said: “What should women do with their hems?” He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “They should let it down a handspan.” She said: “In that case, their feet will be exposed.” He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Then let it down a forearm’s length, but no more than that.”
From this, it is understood that women who drag several yards of cloth behind them, especially on the occasion of marriage, are also included in this warning. Among European nations, and by their imitation, among Muslim women as well, this evil custom has spread that on the occasion of marriage, they wear a long trailing skirt which drags behind, and sometimes several women hold it up and walk along. These women, afflicted by ostentation and arrogance, are also deprived of Allah’s gaze of kindness. A woman should not keep her ankles exposed like men, but should cover her feet, yet she should not let her garment hang more than a forearm’s length (two handspans); it is better to let it down only a handspan.
➌ “Whoever drags his garment out of arrogance.”
From this, it is understood that if someone’s garment goes below the ankles without arrogance, he is not included in this warning. Thus, in Sahih Bukhari, it is narrated from Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma that after hearing this statement of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu said: “O Messenger of Allah! One side of my lower garment hangs down unless I take special care of it.” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: «إنك لست ممن يصنعه خيلاء» “You are not among those who do this out of arrogance.”
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah says: «إلا أن أتعاهد ذلك منه» “Unless I take care of it,” meaning, when I am heedless of it, it slips down. In Ahmad’s narration from Ma’mar from Zayd ibn Aslam, it is stated: «إن إزارى يسترخى أحيانا», “Sometimes my lower garment slips down.” It appears that due to walking or movement, the knot of his garment would loosen without his intention, but when he paid special attention, it would not slip, because whenever it started to slip, he would tighten it. Ibn Sa’d narrated from Talhah ibn Abdullah ibn Abdur Rahman ibn Abi Bakr from Aisha that she said: «كان أبوبكر أحنى لا يستمسك إزاره یسترخى عن حقويه» “Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu was of a stooped stature and could not hold his garment, so it would slip from his hips.”
It is now clear that Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu did not intentionally let his garment hang down; sometimes, due to inattention, it would slip. Thus, if someone’s garment slips down, it is neither arrogance nor is there any accountability for it.
➍ If someone intentionally lets his garment hang and claims that he did not do so out of arrogance, his statement is not valid, because the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam specified the position of the believer’s garment as the muscle (thick part) of the shin, then specified the middle of the shin, and at most allowed it to be above the ankles, and forbade letting it hang below that. As evidence, several ahadith are presented:
«عن أبى هريرة رضى الله عنه عن النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم قال ما أسفل من الكعبين من الإزار ففي النار» [صحيح بخاري]
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Whatever part of the lower garment is below the ankles is in the Fire.”
«عن حذيفة قال : اخذ رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بعضلة ساقي او ساقه فقال : ”هذا موضع الإزار“ فإن ابيت فاسفل فإن ابيت فلا حق للإزار فى الكعبين . قال ابوعيسى : هذا حديث حسن صحيح» [ترمذي اللباس 1783]
Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu says that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam took hold of my shin or his own shin’s muscle (thick part) and said: “The place of the garment is here; if you do not accept, then a little below this; if you do not accept even this, then the garment has no right to be at the ankles.” Abu Isa (Tirmidhi) said: This hadith is hasan sahih.
Besides this, this hadith is also in Ahmad, Nasa’i, and Ibn Majah; see Sahih al-Tirmidhi 1457.
Abu Sa’id radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
«إزرة المؤمن إلى نصف الساق ولا جناح عليه فيما بينه وبين الكعبين ما كان أسفل من الكعبين فهو فى النار من جر إزاره بطرا لم ينظر الله إليه» [صحيح - مالك، أحمد، أبوداود، ابن ماجه، ابن حبان، بيهقي، صحيح الجامع 921]
“The state of the believer’s garment is up to the middle of the shin, and there is no sin upon him between that and the ankles. Whatever is below the ankles is in the Fire. Whoever lets his garment hang out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him.”
➎ Intentionally letting the garment hang is included in arrogance, even if the person claims he did not do so out of arrogance. Jabir ibn Sulaym radi Allahu anhu says that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, among other things, said to him:
«وارفع إزارك إلى نصف الساق فإن ابيت فإلى الكعبين وإياك وإسبال الإزار فإنها من المخيلة وإن الله لا يحب المخيلة» [أبوداود 4084، نسائي، حاكم، صحيح أبى داود 3442]
“And keep your garment raised up to the middle of the shin; if you do not accept, then up to the ankles, and beware of letting the garment hang, for indeed, this is certainly from arrogance, and Allah does not like arrogance.” And see [صحيح ابي داود 3442]
➏ If someone lets his garment hang because his shins are crooked or thin, this is also impermissible.
«عن الشريد رضى الله عنه قال : أبصر رسول الله رجلا يجر إزاره فأسرع إليه أو هرول فقال : ”إرفع إزارك واتق الله“، قال : إني أحنف تصطك ركبتاي . فقال : ”ارفع إزارك كل خلق الله حسن“، فما رؤي ذلك الرجل بعد إلا إزاره يصيب أنصاف ساقيه .» [مسند أحمد 390/4]
Shurayd radi Allahu anhu says that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam saw a man dragging his garment, so he hurried towards him or ran to him and said: “Raise your garment and fear Allah.” He said: “My feet are crooked, my knees rub together.” He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Raise your garment, for everything Allah the Mighty and Majestic has created is beautiful.” After that, whenever that man was seen, his garment was at the middle of his shin.”
The chain of this hadith is authentic, and all its narrators are narrators of Bukhari and Muslim. [
This hadith shows that the companion’s letting his garment hang was not due to arrogance, but the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade it because there could be suspicion of arrogance in it.
It is narrated from Amr ibn Fulan al-Ansari radi Allahu anhu that once he was walking with his garment hanging, and the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam came to him, holding the hair of his forehead and saying: “O Allah! I am Your servant, the son of Your servant, the son of Your maidservant.” (Expressing his humility to draw attention to the arrogance that appears from a hanging garment.) Amr radi Allahu anhu says: (Upon hearing this, I said: O Messenger of Allah! I am a man with thin shins, that is why I keep my garment raised.) He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “O Amr! Indeed, Allah the Mighty and Majestic has created everything beautiful.” Then the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam placed the four fingers of his right hand below Amr’s knee and said: “O Amr! This is the place of the garment.” Then he lifted his fingers and placed them again below that and said: “O Amr! This is the place of the garment.” Then he lifted his fingers and placed them again below that and said: “O Amr! This is the place of the garment.”
This hadith is narrated by Tabarani from Abu Umamah radi Allahu anhu, who reported this incident as an eyewitness account of Amr ibn Zurara. In the narration of Musnad Ahmad mentioned above, Amr himself narrated his incident, but there it is mentioned as Amr ibn Fulan; he is the same Amr ibn Zurara, and Tabarani himself narrated this from Amr ibn Zurara as well. Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah says its narrators are trustworthy.
➐ Whoever intentionally has a garment or trousers tailored longer than necessary and keeps it below the ankles, there are other reasons for its impermissibility besides arrogance.
First Reason:
It is extravagance (israf), which is forbidden, because Allah the Exalted has prohibited it.
«وَلَا تُسْرِفُوا إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْرِفِينَ» [7-الأعراف:31]
“And do not be extravagant; indeed, He does not like the extravagant.”
«وَلَا تُبَذِّرْ تَبْذِيرًا ٭ إِنَّ الْمُبَذِّرِينَ كَانُوا إِخْوَانَ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَكَانَ الشَّيْطَانُ لِرَبِّهِ كَفُورًا» [17-الإسراء:26]
“And do not be extravagant; indeed, the extravagant are brothers of the devils, and the devil is ever ungrateful to his Lord.”
Second Reason:
It is imitation of women, which is even more apparent than extravagance.
Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu narrates:
«أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لعن المرأة تلبس لبسة الرجل والرجل يلبس لبسة المرأة»
“The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam cursed the woman who wears men’s clothing and the man who wears women’s clothing.” [
Al-Hakim said this hadith is authentic according to the conditions of Muslim.
It should be clear that if a woman keeps her ankles exposed, it is imitation of men, and if a man covers his ankles, it is imitation of women.
Third Reason:
It is that there is a risk of impurity (najasah) attaching to the garment of the one who lets it hang, whereas Allah the Exalted has commanded: «وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ» [74-المدثر:4] “And purify your garments.” The Commander of the Faithful, Umar ibn al-Khattab radi Allahu anhu, while forbidding letting the garment hang, also mentioned this reason.
In Sahih Bukhari, the detailed incident of the martyrdom of Umar ibn al-Khattab radi Allahu anhu is mentioned. Amr ibn Maymun narrates that when the Commander of the Faithful was stabbed in the stomach, he was carried home. We also went with him. Nabidh (a drink) was prepared; he drank it, but it came out from his wound. Then milk was brought; he drank it, but it came out from the wound. People became certain that he would die. Now we entered upon him, and people began to come and praise him. A young man came and said: “O Commander of the Faithful! Rejoice in glad tidings from Allah. You have enjoyed the companionship of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and the blessing of precedence in Islam, then you became a ruler and acted justly, then you attained martyrdom.” He said: “I would prefer that all of this be equal, neither for me nor against me.” When the young man turned to leave, his garment was touching the ground. Umar said: “Bring that young man back to me.” He said:
«يا ابن أخي إرفع ثوبك فانه انقي لثوبك واتقي لربك»
“Nephew, raise your garment, for it is cleaner for your garment and more God-fearing for your Lord.” [
Here, those brothers should reflect who consider letting the garment hang below the ankles as something trivial, that the Commander of the Faithful radi Allahu anhu considered it necessary to forbid letting the garment hang even in such a state of distress.
➑ The word «من جر ثوبه إلخ» mentioned in the hadith under discussion clearly shows that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not only forbid letting the lower garment hang, but forbade letting any garment—be it lower garment, trousers, or shirt—hang below the ankles.

Benefit:
It is established from this hadith that it is obligatory for men to keep their ankles uncovered; otherwise, they will face punishment. Some people have made a baseless distinction that during prayer in the mosque, the ankles should be uncovered, but outside it is not necessary. This statement is rejected due to its lack of evidence. It is mentioned in the ahadith that whether in happiness or sorrow, whether in the mosque or outside, in every situation, men should keep their ankles uncovered. And some have presented the philosophy that this is only prohibited if it is done out of arrogance, whereas in countless ahadith, there is a prohibition for men to cover their ankles, and to reject these ahadith is itself arrogance. The definition of arrogance is also this: “to reject the truth and to consider people inferior.” Arrogance is a major sin, from which one must avoid in every situation.
