Hadith 5785

Narrated Abu Bakra: The solar eclipse occurred while we were sitting with the Prophet He got up dragging his garment (on the ground) hurriedly till he reached the mosque The people turned (to the mosque) and he offered a two-rak`at prayer whereupon the eclipse was over and he traced us and said, "The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah, so if you see a thing like this (eclipse) then offer the prayer and invoke Allah till He remove that state."

Hadith Commentary:

In this hadith, there is mention of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam dragging his cloak when he walked suddenly. This is what corresponds to the chapter: if, without intention, it so happens that the cloak or lower garment drags on the ground, then there is no sin in it.

Hadith Commentary:
In this hadith, a second exceptional case regarding the garment being below the ankles is mentioned: sometimes a person stands up in haste, and inadvertently his garment slips below the ankles.
In such a situation, there is no blame, as is mentioned in this hadith where the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), upon suddenly walking, had his garment trailing. That is, if the garment goes below the ankles and drags on the ground without intention or purpose, there is no sin.
Similarly, women are also exempted from this warning. Furthermore, if there are boils or sores on the ankles and the garment is lowered below the ankles to cover them, then there will also be no accountability in this case.
In sha Allah.

Hadith Commentary:
Here, the objection has been raised that this hadith does not correspond to the chapter heading, as there is not even a mention of the moon in it. The answer is that this narration is an abridged version of the narration that comes later, in which the moon is clearly mentioned. Therefore, the intended narration is that second one, and this one has been mentioned so that it becomes known that the narration has also been transmitted in an abridged form. Some have said that in one manuscript of Sahih al-Bukhari, this hadith is worded as "the moon was eclipsed" (inkasafa al-qamar). Secondly, it is possible that Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah intended to allude to the version of this hadith which Ibn Abi Shaybah has transmitted, in which it is worded as "the sun and the moon were eclipsed" (inkasafat al-shams wa al-qamar).

It is the habit of Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah to mention a hadith and then allude to its other transmission routes, and to derive the chapter's purpose from that (Wahidi).

In Sirat Ibn Hibban, it is mentioned that in the 5th year (Hijri), there was also a lunar eclipse, and the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed the prayer in congregation on that occasion as well.

It is thus known that the ruling for both lunar and solar eclipses is the same. However, our respected Hanafi brothers do not hold the view of congregational prayer for the lunar eclipse. They issue the fatwa that it should be performed individually.

In this matter, apart from analogical reasoning (qiyas), they have no solid evidence, yet they persist in this view. But for the lovers of the Sunnah of the Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, the way of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is the best and most excellent thing.

Alhamdulillah for that.
