Hadith Commentary:
From this narration, it is understood that the Fajr prayer was connected directly to the pre-dawn meal (suhoor), meaning that after completing suhoor, as soon as the time for Fajr began, the prayer would be performed.
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah wants to establish from this narration that Hazrat Sahl bin Sa’d radi Allahu anhu would try to reach Masjid Nabawi quickly after having suhoor at home so that he could perform the Fajr prayer behind the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
From this, it is understood that the Fajr prayer would be started immediately after finishing suhoor.
This is clarified in other narrations as well. For example, there is a narration from Hazrat Jabir radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would perform the morning prayer while it was still dark (Sahih al-Bukhari, Mawaqit al-Salat, Hadith: 565).
Also, it is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“The time for the Fajr prayer is from the appearance of dawn until the rising of the sun.”
(Sahih Muslim, al-Masajid, Hadith: 1385(612))
