Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I asked Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, "If a person is afflicted by magic or is prevented from reaching his wife (due to magic), is it permissible to use incantations to counteract it and to nullify the magic?" He replied, "There is no objection in this. Those who remove magic have good intentions, and Allah the Exalted has not forbidden anything from which benefit is derived."

Narrated Aisha: Magic was worked on Allah's Apostle so that he used to think that he had sexual relations with his wives while he actually had not (Sufyan said: That is the hardest kind of magic as it has such an effect). Then one day he said, "O `Aisha do you know that Allah has instructed me concerning the matter I asked Him about? Two men came to me and one of them sat near my head and the other sat near my feet. The one near my head asked the other. What is wrong with this man?' The latter replied the is under the effect of magic The first one asked, Who has worked magic on him?' The other replied Labid bin Al-A'sam, a man from Bani Zuraiq who was an ally of the Jews and was a hypocrite.' The first one asked, What material did he use)?' The other replied, 'A comb and the hair stuck to it.' The first one asked, 'Where (is that)?' The other replied. 'In a skin of pollen of a male date palm tree kept under a stone in the well of Dharwan' '' So the Prophet went to that well and took out those things and said "That was the well which was shown to me (in a dream) Its water looked like the infusion of Henna leaves and its date-palm trees looked like the heads of devils." The Prophet added, "Then that thing was taken out' I said (to the Prophet ) "Why do you not treat yourself with Nashra?" He said, "Allah has cured me; I dislike to let evil spread among my people."
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Among the things that were taken out from the well named Dharwan were a comb and a string with eleven knots tied in it, as well as a wax effigy into which needles had been stuck.
Jibril (alayhis salam) came and informed that you should recite the Mu'awwidhatayn (the last two surahs of the Qur'an). Accordingly, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would recite each verse, and with each verse, one knot would be untied and one needle would be removed from the effigy.
When a needle was removed, you would feel pain.
Eventually, all the knots were untied and the needles were removed, and you were freed from the effect of magic as if a bound person had been released.
(Fath al-Bari: 10/283) (2)
The act of undoing magic is called nushrah.
If it is done with polytheistic words or by means of magic, it is forbidden, as when the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was asked about it, he said:
"This is a satanic act."
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Medicine, Hadith: 3868)
But if the treatment of magic is done with Qur'anic verses and prescribed supplications, then it is permissible, as when a woman brought her child to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) who was afflicted by a jinn and could not speak.
She said:
"O Messenger of Allah! This is my son, and he is the only child in my house, and he is afflicted by a jinn. He does not speak."
He said:
"Bring me a little water."
When the water was brought, he washed his hands and rinsed his mouth, then gave the used water to her and said:
"Give him some of this water to drink, and pour some over him, and also supplicate to Allah the Exalted for his healing."
Umm Jundub says that after a year I met that woman and asked her about the child.
She said:
"He has recovered and has become so intelligent that he is not like ordinary people."
