Hadith 5736

In this chapter, Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated a tradition from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: Some of the companions of the Prophet came across a tribe amongst the tribes of the Arabs, and that tribe did not entertain them. While they were in that state, the chief of that tribe was bitten by a snake (or stung by a scorpion). They said, (to the companions of the Prophet ), "Have you got any medicine with you or anybody who can treat with Ruqya?" The Prophet's companions said, "You refuse to entertain us, so we will not treat (your chief) unless you pay us for it." So they agreed to pay them a flock of sheep. One of them (the Prophet's companions) started reciting Surat-al-Fatiha and gathering his saliva and spitting it (at the snake-bite). The patient got cured and his people presented the sheep to them, but they said, "We will not take it unless we ask the Prophet (whether it is lawful)." When they asked him, he smiled and said, "How do you know that Surat-al-Fatiha is a Ruqya? Take it (flock of sheep) and assign a share for me."

Hadith Commentary:
In addition to many rulings and the virtues of Surah Al-Fatihah, this hadith also establishes that it is permissible to take a wage for teaching the Qur’an, but the intention should be that the wage is for the time spent, because teaching the Qur’an is such a great act that its true reward cannot be compensated by any wage.
It is also understood from this that if a person does not know a ruling, it is necessary to ask those who possess knowledge, and in fact, it is obligatory to investigate and verify. Blind following (taqlid) without understanding is absolutely impermissible.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Surah Al-Fatihah comprises the fundamentals of the religion and the Most Beautiful Names (Asma’ al-Husna) of Allah.
In it is the affirmation of the Hereafter, mention of monotheism (tawhid), and the declaration of the servants’ neediness—that they seek help only from Allah and request guidance only from Him. Furthermore, it contains mention of an excellent supplication, in which a person asks Allah to guide him upon the straight path (sirat al-mustaqim). Then, in this Fatihah, there is mention of the categories of creation:
There are some upon whom Allah bestowed His favor because they recognized the truth and acted according to it.
There are some who, after recognizing the truth, did not act according to it—upon them is Allah’s wrath. And there are some who did not recognize the truth at all—they are astray.

(2)
In this surah, there is mention of divine decree (qadar), the sacred law (shari‘ah), the Hereafter, repentance (tawbah), purification of the soul (tazkiyat al-nafs), and rectification of the heart.
On this basis, this surah is worthy that, through it, one seeks healing from Allah for every illness.
(Fath al-Bari: 10/244)
In any case, besides the Mu‘awwidhat (the last two surahs), one may also perform ruqyah (recitation for healing) with Surah Al-Fatihah, and in this regard, it holds the rank of an elixir.
It is our experience that performing ruqyah with Surah Al-Fatihah is a means of healing from every illness.
Wallahu al-musta‘an (And Allah is the One whose help is sought).
