Hadith 5712

Aisha added: We put medicine in one side of his mouth but he started waving us not to insert the medicine into his mouth. We said, "He dislikes the medicine as a patient usually does." But when he came to his senses he said, "Did I not forbid you to put medicine (by force) in the side of my mouth?" We said, "We thought it was just because a patient usually dislikes medicine." He said, "None of those who are in the house but will be forced to take medicine in the side of his mouth while I am watching, except Al-`Abbas, for he had not witnessed your deed."

Hadith Commentary:

Abu Bakr as-Siddiq radi Allahu anhu, out of love, kissed the blessed body of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. From this, it is established that it is permissible to kiss a pious, God-fearing person out of love, provided that there is no aspect of shirk (associating partners with Allah) involved—such as if the one kissing believes that by this kiss his need has been fulfilled or that a particular task of his will be accomplished.

These are polytheistic notions in which most uninformed people are entangled today, and this is the very condition of the so-called spiritual guides and mentors of our time.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was in the house of Maymunah radi Allahu anha when he began to experience pain in his side. The women mixed Indian aloeswood (oud hindi) with oil and tried to pour it into his mouth because he was unconscious. He gestured to forbid them from doing so, because this medicine was not effective for the illness; rather, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam described it as a “women’s prescription.” However, despite his prohibition, the women present in the house poured the medicine into his mouth. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam then ordered, as a form of punishment, that the medicine be poured into their mouths.
(2)
Maymunah radi Allahu anha, Umm Salamah, and Asma bint Umais radi Allahu anha had the medicine poured into their mouths. Maymunah radi Allahu anha was in a state of fasting. (Fath al-Bari: 8/185)
