بَابُ الْحِجَامَةِ مِنَ الدَّاءِ:Chapter. To be cupped (as a treatment) for a disease.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُقَاتِلٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا حُمَيْدٌ الطَّوِيلُ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنْ أَجْرِ الْحَجَّامِ ، فَقَالَ : " احْتَجَمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، حَجَمَهُ أَبُو طَيْبَةَ ، وَأَعْطَاهُ صَاعَيْنِ مِنْ طَعَامٍ وَكَلَّمَ مَوَالِيَهُ ، فَخَفَّفُوا عَنْهُ ، وَقَالَ : إِنَّ أَمْثَلَ مَا تَدَاوَيْتُمْ بِهِ الْحِجَامَةُ وَالْقُسْطُ الْبَحْرِيُّ ، وَقَالَ : لَا تُعَذِّبُوا صِبْيَانَكُمْ بِالْغَمْزِ مِنَ الْعُذْرَةِ وَعَلَيْكُمْ بِالْقُسْطِ .
Narrated Anas: that he was asked about the wages of the one who cups others. He said, 'Allah's Apostle was cupped by `Abd Taiba, to whom he gave two Sa of food and interceded for him with his masters who consequently reduced what they used to charge him daily. Then the Prophet s said, "The best medicines you may treat yourselves with are cupping and sea incense.' He added, "You should not torture your children by treating tonsillitis by pressing the tonsils or the palate with the finger, but use incense."

Hadith Commentary:

Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has written that the statement of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam regarding cupping (hijamah) is addressed to the people of Hijaz and those residing in their vicinity, because due to the heat, their blood is thinner. The heat from their bodies rises to the surface of the skin, causing the blood pressure to also move towards the outer part of the body; therefore, in such circumstances, cupping is beneficial for them.

It is also understood from this that this address is not for the elderly, because they already suffer from a deficiency of blood. Thus, Tabari has narrated with a sound chain from Ibn Sirin that when a person reaches the age of forty, he should not undergo cupping, because doing so will further increase weakness. (Tahdhib al-Athar by Tabari: 6/365, and Fath al-Bari: 10/187)

According to our inclination, this applies in the case when another method of treatment is possible; if treatment by cupping is necessary, then it may be performed at this age. And Allah knows best.
