Hadith 5679

Narrated Rubai bint Mu`adh bin Afra: We used to go for Military expeditions along with Allah's Apostle and provide the people with water, serve them and bring the dead and the wounded back to Medina.

Hadith Commentary:
The meaning derived from the chapter is that women used to participate in war and jihad, serving by tending to the wounded, dressing wounds, and performing similar services. Thus, the objective of the chapter is established. However, even in such circumstances, it is necessary to observe the covering (satr) of the private parts.

Maulana Waheed uz-Zaman states: O Muslims! See, you are the nation whose women also used to go out for jihad. They used to serve the mujahideen by doing their chores, providing care, and acting as nurses in treatment and medical care. When needed, they would even take up arms and confront the disbelievers. The bravery of Khawlah bint Azwar radi Allahu anha is well known—how many Christians she struck down with arrows and swords, attacking like a lioness. Safiyyah bint Abdul Muttalib radi Allahu anha took up a mace and prepared herself to strike the Jews of Banu Qurayzah. But now, the state of your men is such that at the mere sound of cannons and guns, or at the sight of a sword’s flash, they lose their senses.

From this hadith, it is also derived that the legal covering (shar‘i purdah) is only to the extent that a woman must cover those parts of her body which are obligatory to conceal from non-mahram men—not that she must not leave the house at all.

A part of the chapter’s translation is that a man may tend to a woman’s care. Although this is not explicitly mentioned in the hadith, it is deduced by analogy from the other part. Qastallani said: When a woman treats a man, if the man is a mahram, then there is no problem at all. If he is a non-mahram, then even so, in times of necessity, it is permissible to touch or look to the extent of need.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
There is no mention of treatment in this narration, but Imam Bukhari rahimahullah, as per his usual practice, has alluded to that narration in which medical treatment is explicitly mentioned. Thus, it is stated that "we used to bandage the wounds of the injured."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Jihad wal-Siyar, Hadith: 2882) (2)
In the Book of Jihad, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has established a chapter heading for this hadith with the following words:
(Bab Mudaawat an-Nisaa’ al-Jurha fil-Ghazw)
“Chapter: Women treating the wounded during military expeditions.”
(Chapter: 67)
Furthermore, it is mentioned in this hadith:
Women can treat men.
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has established the second part of the heading by analogy, that when women can treat men, then men can also treat women. However, in this, looking and touching should be restricted only to the extent of necessity.
