Narrated Ibn `Abbas: When Allah's Apostle was on his death-bed and in the house there were some people among whom was `Umar bin Al-Khattab, the Prophet said, "Come, let me write for you a statement after which you will not go astray." `Umar said, "The Prophet is seriously ill and you have the Qur'an; so the Book of Allah is enough for us." The people present in the house differed and quarrelled. Some said "Go near so that the Prophet may write for you a statement after which you will not go astray," while the others said as `Umar said. When they caused a hue and cry before the Prophet, Allah's Apostle said, "Go away!" Narrated 'Ubaidullah: Ibn `Abbas used to say, "It was very unfortunate that Allah's Apostle was prevented from writing that statement for them because of their disagreement and noise."

Hadith Commentary:
The goodness in it was that it was in accordance with Allah’s pleasure. After this incident, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) remained alive for three more days. If it had been his intention to have a will written, he could have done so at any time afterward, but after that, he did not even allude to it. This shows that it was a matter specific to that moment, which is why afterward he remained completely silent.

Hafiz Sahib has written the etiquettes of visiting the sick, that the one going for visitation should not stand directly in front of the door when seeking permission, and should gently knock on the latch, and introduce himself clearly by name. He should not visit at a time when the patient is taking medicine, and should spend little time in the visit, keep his gaze lowered, ask few questions, and, displaying tenderness and compassion, sincerely pray for the patient. He should give the patient hope of recovery, mention to him the virtues of patience and gratitude, and try to prevent him from panic and restlessness, etc., etc. (Fath al-Bari)

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The purpose of Imam Bukhari rahimahullah in citing this hadith is to show that those who visit the sick should avoid saying things in the presence of the patient that might sadden him, to the extent that he may ask them to leave his side.

(2)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has written some etiquettes of visiting the sick on this occasion: Firstly, the visitor should seek permission before entering, and when seeking permission, he should not stand directly in front of the door, but rather knock gently or ring the bell calmly and peacefully, then introduce himself clearly.
He should not visit at a time when the patient is taking medicine.
The visit should be kept as brief as possible.
During the visit, he should keep his gaze lowered.
He should ask few questions.
He should treat the patient with love and compassion.
He should give him hope of recovery and inform him of the virtues of patience and gratitude.
He should sincerely pray for the patient.
He should advise against wailing, lamenting, crying, shouting, and panicking.
