Hadith 5638

Narrated `Asim al-Ahwal: I saw the drinking bowl of the Prophet with Anas bin Malik, and it had been broken, and he had mended it with silver plates. That drinking bowl was quite wide and made of Nadar wood, Anas said, "I gave water to the Prophet in that bowl more than so-and-so (for a long period)." Ibn Seereen said: Around that bowl there was an iron ring, and Anas wanted to replace it with a silver or gold ring, but Abu Talha said to him, "Do not change a thing that Allah's Apostle has made." So Anas left it as it was.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
It is stated in Sahih Muslim that I used to serve the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) honey, nabidh (fermented drink), water, and milk in this cup.
(Sahih Muslim, Al-Ashribah, Hadith: 5237 (2008))
Hazrat Asim says that I have seen that cup and have also drunk water from it.

(2)
We have already detailed the relics (tabarrukat) of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) under Kitab Fard al-Khums, Chapter: 5; it should be reviewed there.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
The intention of the Imam here is that if the inheritance of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had been distributed, then that bowl would have been distributed as well, whereas it was not distributed.
Rather, the caliphs continued to keep it with them as a blessed relic.
Similarly, in previous hadiths, there is mention of the old sandals of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and in the hadith of Aisha (radi Allahu anha), there is mention of his cloak and waist-wrapper.
It is thus evident that none of the items left behind by the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) were distributed.

Hadith Commentary:

In one hadith, it is mentioned that the bowl was very large and of excellent quality, made from the finest wood.
(, Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Ashriba, Hadith: 5638)
At the end of this hadith, it is stated that it had a piece of iron in it.
When Anas radi Allahu anhu intended to replace it with a gold or silver ring, Abu Talhah radi Allahu anhu forbade him and said:
"Do not make any change in it, but let it remain in the same condition as it was with the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam." Thus, Anas radi Allahu anhu left it in the same state.
(, Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Ashriba, Hadith: 5638)
Hajjaj bin Hassan says:
Once we were with Anas radi Allahu anhu, and he had a vessel brought which had three pieces of iron attached to it and also had an iron ring. He took it out from a black covering, filled it with water, and it was brought to us. We drank from it, sprinkled it on our heads and faces, and sent blessings upon the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
(, Musnad Ahmad 3/187)

Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has written, quoting Allamah Qurtubi rahimahullah:
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah says:
"I saw that bowl with someone in Basra and drank water from it.
He had bought that bowl from the estate inherited by Nadr bin Anas for eight hundred thousand."
(, Fath al-Bari: 10/124)
With the passage of time, this bowl of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam also became extinct or was lost due to wars and tribulations.

The purpose of Imam Bukhari rahimahullah is that none of the items left by the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam were distributed, rather, they were kept as relics for the sake of blessing (tabarruk).
And Allah knows best.

Lexical Explanation:
«اَلْقَدَح» "Qaf" and "Dal" both have a fatha. It means a small bowl.

«اَلشَّعْب» With a fatha on the "Sheen" and sukoon on the "Ain". It means a broken place.

«سِلْسِلَة» In both instances, with a fatha on the "Seen". It is used in the sense of joining and connecting one thing with another. And in both places, it can also be with a kasrah on the "Seen". In this case, the meaning will be: an iron chain that is as fine as thread. The meaning is that the broken parts on both sides were joined together with a silver wire.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ This hadith is evidence that it is permissible to use a small amount of silver for such necessities and purposes. That is, if a small quantity of gold or silver is used out of necessity in eating and drinking vessels, then it is permissible to eat and drink from such vessels, and it is also permissible and correct, without any dislike, to perform ablution (wudu) and ritual bath (ghusl) with them.

➋ The use of vessels made of gold and silver involves arrogance and pride. Arrogance, haughtiness, and pride are not liked by the Creator of the universe; therefore, their use has been declared impermissible. On the other hand, joining a broken vessel with a wire is done out of necessity, and there is no element of arrogance or pride in it; for this reason, its use has been permitted.
