Hadith 5610

The Prophet added: I was raised to the Lote Tree and saw four rivers, two of which were coming out and two going in. Those which were coming out were the Nile and the Euphrates, and those which were going in were two rivers in paradise. Then I was given three bowls, one containing milk, and another containing honey, and a third containing wine. I took the bowl containing milk and drank it. It was said to me, "You and your followers will be on the right path (of Islam)."

Hadith Commentary:
Imam Bukhari has connected these narrations in the Book of the Beginning of Creation.
Milk was brought before the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and after drinking it, he was shown a journey through the realm of the dominion of the heavens. Sidrat al-Muntaha is called so because the knowledge of the angels ends there, and they cannot proceed beyond that point.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In all these hadiths, milk is mentioned in one way or another. Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has presented these hadiths to refute the view that drinking a large amount of milk causes intoxication, and therefore it should not be consumed in excess. However, there is no basis for this view, because drinking milk is established from the Book of Allah. If someone becomes intoxicated from drinking a lot of milk, then he should correct his own disposition; there is no fault in the milk itself. Or, milk is made harmful by mixing it with something else. Thus, Ibn Sirin narrates that someone asked Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu about wine, i.e., the people of such-and-such region distill wine from such-and-such things. He mentioned five types of composite wines. Of these, I remember the one that was prepared from honey, barley, and milk. Ibn Sirin says that since then I was very worried about informing others regarding milk, until I learned of such a wine prepared from milk that causes a person to immediately lose consciousness upon consumption. (: Fath al-Bari: 10/89)

(2)
In the last hadith presented by Imam Bukhari rahimahullah, it is mentioned that on the occasion of Mi'raj, three cups were presented to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: one of milk, the second of honey, and the third of wine. The reason for not preferring wine is mentioned in the hadith, but why did he not prefer honey, even though other hadiths show that he was very fond of honey and sweet things? Perhaps the secret in this is that milk is more beneficial. It strengthens the bones and produces flesh. Its pure use is a cause of strength. Its use in any way does not fall within the bounds of extravagance. Although honey is lawful, its use can become a cause of worldly pleasures. According to our inclination, there may also be this wisdom: when the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was presented with three cups, he was thirsty, so he chose milk, as it could quench thirst, whereas wine and honey could not fulfill this need. (: Fath al-Bari: 10/93) And Allah knows best.

(3)
It should be noted that in one hadith, the mention is of two cups being presented. (: Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Ashriba, Hadith: 5576) But there is no contradiction in this, because two cups were presented at the station of Ilya, when he was at Bayt al-Maqdis, and three cups were presented at Sidrat al-Muntaha. And Allah knows best.
