Hadith 5580

Narrated Anas: "Alcoholic drinks were prohibited at the time we could rarely find wine made from grapes in Medina, for most of our liquors were made from unripe and ripe dates.

Hadith Commentary:
The purpose of Anas radi Allahu anhu was to refute the position that the hadith regarding wine is restricted only to wine made from grapes, because this type of wine was very rarely available in Madinah Tayyibah at the time of its prohibition. Rather, every drink that is intoxicating is included in the prohibition. Thus, the noble statement of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is:
“Wine is made from wheat, there is wine from barley, wine is distilled from raisins, dried dates are used for wine, and wine is also prepared from honey.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Al-Ashribah, Hadith: 3379)
In short, any drink that is intoxicating is wine, regardless of what it is made from.
And Allah knows best.
