Hadith 5575

Narrated Ibn `Umar: Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever drinks alcoholic drinks in the world and does not repent (before dying), will be deprived of it in the Hereafter."

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
A person who drinks alcohol will be deprived of Paradise. In fact, in another hadith, its severity is described in these words: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“For the one who consumes intoxicants, Allah has taken it upon Himself as a covenant that He will make him drink the mud of khabal (ṭīnat al-khabāl) in the Hereafter.”
The Companions radi Allahu anhum asked:
“O Messenger of Allah! What is ṭīnat al-khabāl?” He replied:
“The sweat that comes out from the bodies of the inhabitants of Hell.”
Or he said:
“The blood and pus that flows from the wounds of the inhabitants of Hell.”
(Sahih Muslim, al-Ashriba, Hadith: 5217 (2002))

(2)
In any case, after the prohibition of alcohol, drinking it is an extremely grave crime, such that if a habitual drinker does not repent from drinking, he may be deprived of Paradise.
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has written that this punishment is for merely drinking alcohol, whether it intoxicates him or not, because this punishment has been prescribed for the act of drinking alcohol itself.
