Hadith Commentary:
In this narration, it is explicitly stated that striking the face has been prohibited. Some ignorant teachers have the habit of hitting children on the face. They should take admonition from this hadith.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah first narrated the mawquf (companion-stopped) narration, and after that, he mentioned the marfu‘ (Prophet-attributed) narration. This marfu‘ narration serves as evidence for the mawquf narration: when striking the face is prohibited, then how can branding it be permissible? It is also possible that he alluded in the chapter heading to that narration which is explicit regarding this matter. Thus, it is narrated from Jabir radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade striking the face and branding the face. (Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Libas wa al-Zinah, Hadith: 5550 (2116)) In another narration, it is mentioned that a donkey passed by the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam whose face had been branded, so he said: “The curse of Allah is upon the one who branded it.” (Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Libas wa al-Zinah, Hadith: 5552 (2117))

(2)
Branding as a mark on any part of the body other than the face is permissible. Its explanation will follow. And Allah knows best.
