Narrated `Amr: I said to Jabir bin Zaid, "The people claim that Allah's Apostle forbade the eating of donkey's meat." He said, "Al-Hakam bin `Amr Al-Ghifari used to say so when he was with us, but Ibn `Abbas, the great religious learned man, refused to give a final verdict and recited:-- 'Say: I find not in that which has been inspired to me anything forbidden to be eaten by one who wishes to eat it, unless it be carrion, blood poured forth or the flesh of swine...' Hadith Commentary:
In this verse, there is mention of forbidden foods, in which the aforementioned donkey is not mentioned.
It is possible that Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) was not aware of these ahadith; otherwise, he would never have said so. It is also possible that he later retracted this view upon reflection. And Allah knows best what is correct.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The basis of the reasoning of Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu is that in the aforementioned noble verse, the mention of prohibited things is stated with exclusivity. Everything besides these things is lawful; among them are also donkeys, therefore they are not prohibited. His stance regarding donkeys may be due to the fact that explicit ahadith did not reach him. Thus, in one narration, he said: I do not know whether, on the occasion of Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade the eating of donkey meat so that people would not be deprived of riding animals, or whether he declared it prohibited. (Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Maghazi, Hadith: 4227) (2)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah writes that the verse can be used as evidence only when the prohibition of donkeys is not explicitly transmitted from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Therefore, in view of multiple ahadith, the meat of domesticated donkeys is prohibited. (Fath al-Bari: 9/811)
