Hadith 5442

And Allah, the Exalted, said (in Surah Maryam) addressing Maryam, peace be upon her «وهزي إليك بجذع النخلة تساقط عليك رطبا جنيا‏»: "And shake towards yourself the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you fresh, ripe dates."
Aishah (ra) said, "When Allah's Messenger (saws) died, we had been satisfied by the two black things, i.e., dates and water."

Hadith Commentary:
During times of grain scarcity, these ahadith establish the method of ration distribution at the governmental level.
It is also understood that whether the ration is of good or inferior quality, an equal share should be distributed to everyone.
In today’s era of inflation, there is great guidance in these Prophetic ahadith for the proper distribution of rations, but to observe, understand, and implement them practically requires a discerning eye—not like the dishonest distributors of today, at whose hands, due to improper distribution, the creation of Allah is distressed. This is the second incident of ration distribution.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The favored food of the people of Hijaz was dates.
It is narrated from Aisha radi Allahu anha that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“Those whose house does not contain dates, its inhabitants are hungry.”
(Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, Al-At‘imah, Hadith: 1815)
(2)
In this hadith, dates and water are referred to as “Aswadayn” (the two black things).
Dates are indeed black, but water is called black here due to predominance (taghlib), just as parents are called “Abawayn” (the two fathers) and the sun and moon are called “Qamaran” (the two moons).
