Hadith 5441

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet distributed dates among us, and my share was five dates, four of which were good, and one was a ,Hashafa, and I found the Hashafa the hardest for my teeth.
Narrated Abu `Uthman: I was a guest of Abu Huraira for seven days. Abu Huraira, his wife and his slave used to get up and remain awake for one-third of the night by turns. Each would offer the night prayer and then awaken the other. I heard Abu Huraira saying, "Allah's Apostle distributed dates among his companions and my share was seven dates, one of which was a Hashafa (a date which dried on the tree before it was fully ripe).

Hadith Commentary:

But they also accepted this gladly.
This is the true requirement of obedience, not like those rigid blind followers who act according to the principle of "accept the sweet, spit out the bitter," except whom Allah wills.
From this hadith, the permissibility of distributing rations at the time of need is also established, which Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has proven from this very hadith, and it is evidence of his scholarly ijtihad (independent reasoning). Yet, how many obstinate and self-blinded people are there who do not accept Imam Bukhari as a mujtahid (independent jurist), but rather consider him like their own blind-followed imam—may Allah protect us.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Hashafah is that inferior type of date which does not ripen on the tree but rather dries up and falls off early.

(2)
From this, we learn about the subsistence of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum): they were content with dates, and even those were of ordinary quality and few in number. At times, even inferior types of dates would be among them.

(3)
In one narration, five dates are mentioned, while in another hadith, it is stated that seven dates were received. However, there is no contradiction here, because one number does not negate the other. It is also possible that the first time, five dates were received, and when some remained from them, two more were given. It is also possible that these are two separate incidents at different times: on one occasion, five were given, and on another, seven were allotted.

(4)
From these ahadith, the method of ration distribution at the governmental level is also established: whether the ration is good or inferior, it should be distributed equally among all. However, nowadays, dishonesty and nepotism are rampant, and due to improper distribution, the creation of Allah is greatly distressed. And Allah is the One whose help is sought.
