Narrated Qatada: We used to visit Anas bin Malik while his baker was standing (and baking). Anas would say, "Eat! I do not know that the Prophet had ever seen well-baked bread till he met Allah, nor had he ever seen a roasted sheep with his own eyes."

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Among the Arabs, those who were well-off would take a kid goat, slaughter it, and after cleaning its insides, would place it—skin and all—into very hot water. When its hair would come off, they would roast the whole kid and then eat it with relish. There were two disadvantages to this: firstly, the animal would be slaughtered while still very young, and secondly, its skin would be wasted.
(2)
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) never saw a roasted kid prepared in this manner throughout his life, nor did he ever use a dining table, small bowls, finely ground flour, or sifted flour. Rather, he would use unsifted barley flour as food. However, eating roasted shoulder is established, as will be mentioned in the following hadith.

Hadith Commentary:
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) resided in Madinah Tayyibah for ten years, including the expeditions (ghazawat) and the journeys of Hajj and Umrah. During this period, his food and drink were as described by Sayyiduna Anas (radi Allahu anhu): in fact, Hazrat Aisha (radi Allahu anha) states that never for three consecutive days did he eat his fill of wheat bread.
Most often, he subsisted on barley bread, and even that was occasional; otherwise, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would subsist on water and dates alone.
Another narration from Hazrat Anas (radi Allahu anhu) regarding this matter is also reported: he brought barley bread and fat with a changed color to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), while his coat of mail was mortgaged with a Jew in Madinah Tayyibah.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had taken barley from the Jew in exchange for it for the sustenance of his family, and the family of Muhammad did not have even one sa‘ (a measure) of wheat or any other grain in the evening, while he had nine pure wives.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ It is permissible to take service from a baker, cook, and other employees.
➋ It is correct to prepare something excellent for a guest, just as Anas (radi Allahu anhu) presented freshly baked, hot bread to the visitors.
➌ By "salim bakri (samit)" is meant that a sheep or goat is slaughtered, and then its wool or hair is removed with hot water, after which it is roasted.
➍ Anas (radi Allahu anhu) said this to his students so that they would recognize Allah's blessing, and thus a sense of gratitude would arise in their hearts.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not act with affectation or formality regarding food. Whatever simple food was available, he would partake of it.
➋ Eating roasted meat is permissible, as is evident in Hadith: 3311.
➌ "Shiwa’" refers to that meat which is placed on heated stones, by which it becomes roasted and suitable for eating.
