Narrated Abu Hazim: I asked Sahl bin Sa`d, "Did Allah's Apostle ever eat white flour?" Sahl said, "Allah's Apostle never saw white flour since Allah sent him as an Apostle till He took him unto Him." I asked, "Did the people have (use) sieves during the lifetime of Allah's Apostle?" Sahl said, "Allah's Apostle never saw (used) a sieve since Allah sent him as an Apostle until He took him unto Him," I said, "How could you eat barley unsifted?" he said, "We used to grind it and then blow off its husk, and after the husk flew away, we used to prepare the dough (bake) and eat it."

Hadith Commentary:
The requirement of the Prophetic Sunnah is precisely that every Muslim should even now remain patient and grateful upon such a simple life, in which lies benefit for both religion and worldly affairs.

Hadith Commentary:
Before the time of Prophethood, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) traveled to the regions of Syria, where there was great prosperity and wheat bread was abundantly available, and sieves were also used there. However, after Prophethood, he did not go anywhere except Makkah, Ta’if, and Madinah. He undertook the journey to Tabuk, which was near Syria. There too, he stayed for a few days and then returned. In those areas, neither were there any sieves nor was flour available. In any case, according to Hazrat Sahl (radi Allahu anhu), they would blow into the barley flour, whatever husk would fly away, would be removed, and the remaining flour would be used as sattu (roasted barley flour) or kneaded to make bread. This was the food of those noble companions. In any case, even today, a simple life can be lived. In this, there is benefit and blessing for both religion and worldly life. And Allah knows best.
