Hadith Commentary:
The meaning of Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu is that at that time, Muslims were in such straitened circumstances that seven dates would be given to one person as a ration, and even among those, some would be spoiled or hard. Yet, all of us used to remain content with that.
Even now, it is obligatory upon Muslims to remain content in every situation, whether in hardship or in ease.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Hashafah refers to a date that does not ripen on the tree and its ripening is not complete; therefore, it becomes dry and hard.
(2)
The intention of Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) is to express poverty and hardship, that at that time, Muslims would receive seven dates each as their ration.
Among these, some would be spoiled and hard to chew, but they would be pleased with such dates because they would take longer to chew and the sweetness would remain in the mouth for a longer time.
