Hadith 5403

Narrated Sahl bin Sa`d: We used to be happy on Fridays, for there was an old lady who used to pull out the roots of Silq and put it in a cooking pot with some barley. When we had finished the prayer, we would visit her and she would present that dish before us. So we used to be happy on Fridays because of that, and we never used to take our meals or have a mid-day nap except after the Friday prayer. By Allah, that meal contained no fat.

Hadith Commentary:
It is understood that when vegetables like beetroot are mixed with other grains to make porridge, it can become a delicious type of khichra (mixed porridge). In the early period, when the Muhajirun (emigrants) came to Madinah and there was a state of poverty, even such a sincere invitation (meal) was often considered a great blessing for them.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In the early period of Islam, when the emigrants (Muhajirun) left their homes and came to Madinah Tayyibah, they were in a state of extreme poverty. The “invitation of Shiraz” mentioned in the hadith would have been considered very valuable in those days. Hazrat Sahl bin Sa’d radi Allahu anhu expressed a similar kind of happiness.

(2)
Indeed, when a vegetable like beetroot is mixed with whatever foodstuff is available, and then its porridge is prepared, it becomes an extremely delicious and tasty khichdi (mixed dish). There would not be the slightest trace of ghee (clarified butter) in it. Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has established that there is no harm in eating such food. And Allah knows best.
