Hadith 5388

Narrated Wahb bin Kaisan: The People of Sham taunted `Abdullah bin Az-Zubair by calling him "The son of Dhatin-Nataqain" (the woman who has two waist-belts). (His mother) (Asma, said to him, "O my son! They taunt you with "Nataqain". Do you know what the Nataqain were? That was my waist-belt which I divided in two parts. I tied the water skin of Allah's Apostle with one part, and with the other part I tied his food container."

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary:
This is a verse from the poem of Abu Dhu’ayb the poet.
Its first verse is: "Wa ‘ayyarani al-washun inni uhibbuha."
Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah has cited this hadith to establish that a dining cloth can also be made of fabric.
Asma’ radi Allahu anha, on the night of migration (hijrah), tore her waistband into two pieces: with one she tied the Prophet’s water skin, and with the other she wrapped his provisions.
From that day, her title became "Dhat al-Nitaqayn" (the one with two waistbands).

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Nitaqayn is the dual form of nitaq.
By this is meant the cloth which women tie around their waists.
Asma radi Allahu anha, on the occasion of migration, tore her waistband into two pieces.
With one piece she tied the mouth of the water-skin, and the other she placed as a tablecloth (dastarkhwan) for the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
(2)
The title "Dhat an-Nitaqayn" was a great honor for her, though the people of Sham used it as a taunt.
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah, by narrating this hadith, has established that a tablecloth can also be made of cloth.
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to use this type of tablecloth.
And Allah knows best.
