(1)
In one narration, it is mentioned that Umar bin Abi Salamah radi Allahu anhu began to pick pieces of meat from all around the dish and eat, so the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“O boy! Eat from what is in front of you.”
(Sahih Muslim, Al-Ashribah, Hadith: 5270 (2022))

In any case, among the etiquettes of eating is that a person should eat from what is in front of him. However, if the food consists of different varieties, then one may eat from wherever he wishes, choosing his preferred food.
This restriction applies only in the case when the food is of a single type.
