Narrated `Umar bin Al Salama: Who was the son of Um Salama, the wife of the Prophet: Once I ate a meal with Allah's Apostle and I was eating from all sides of the dish. So Allah's Apostle said to me, "Eat of the dish what is nearer to you."

Hadith Commentary:

If one forgets to say "Bismillah" at the beginning, then whenever he remembers, he should say: "Bismillah awwalahu wa akhirahu" (In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end). If there are many people at the meal, then one should say "Bismillah" aloud so that others are also reminded.

Saying "Bismillah" at the beginning and eating with the right hand is obligatory (wajib).

In one hadith, it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) stopped a man from eating with his left hand. He said, "I cannot eat with my right hand." The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, "Then you will not be able to eat with your right hand." His right hand became paralyzed.

His ability to lie was immediately punished.

We seek refuge with Allah from the wrath of Allah.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
If one forgets to say "Bismillah" at the beginning of the meal, then whenever he remembers, he should say: "Bismillah awwalahu wa akhirahu" (In the name of Allah at its beginning and at its end). In this way, the omission of saying "Bismillah" at the start is compensated for.
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Al-At'imah, Hadith: 3767)

(2)
One should eat with the right hand because the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) saw a man eating with his left hand, so he said:
"Eat with your right hand."
He replied:
"I cannot eat with my right hand," although he was able to do so.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Then you will not be able to eat with it (your right hand) in the future."
After that, his right hand became paralyzed.
(Sahih Muslim, Al-Ashribah, Hadith: 5268 (2021))
Allah Ta'ala punished this man for lying, therefore we should be diligent in eating and drinking with the right hand.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: This hadith establishes that one should eat from what is in front of oneself, because eating from in front of others is a sign of greed and covetousness, and it is an infringement upon the rights of others. However, if there are different types of food or various fruits placed in different spots, then it is permissible to eat from another place, because one person may prefer a certain food while another may prefer something else, or every individual may wish to partake of every kind.

Explanation:
1:
Several points are learned from this hadith:

One should say "Bismillah" before eating.
Its important benefit, as established by some ahadith, is that Satan cannot partake in such food.
Along with this, it is an expression of gratitude to the One who has granted us the blessing of food.

It is also understood from this hadith that among the etiquettes of eating is to eat from what is in front of and near oneself.

Young children should be included in eating together.

Children should be made aware of all the etiquettes related to that gathering.

Food should be eaten with the right hand.

Benefits and Issues:
Benefit: Sitting and eating with children and servants is a Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
It is also necessary to teach children and those with little knowledge the Islamic etiquettes.
Especially, the three matters mentioned regarding eating are very important.

Benefits and Issues:

Abu Salamah Abdullah bin Abd al-Asad was the son of the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) paternal aunt, Barrah bint Abd al-Muttalib.
He was among the earliest of the forerunners (sabiqeen awwaleen).

When he passed away in 4 AH, his wife Umm Salamah Hind bint Abi Umayyah (radi Allahu anha) attained the honor of becoming Mother of the Believers (Umm al-Mu’minin).
In this way, their son Umar bin Abu Salamah (radi Allahu anhu) and daughter Zaynab bint Abu Salamah (radi Allahu anha) came under the care of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

If children make a mistake, they should be gently corrected.

Children should be instructed in a clear and simple manner, and brevity should be kept in mind.

When there is only one type of food in a dish, everyone should eat from what is in front of them; however, if there are different kinds of items (such as dates or sweets, etc.),
then one may take their preferred item even from another side.

Benefit:
From this hadith, it is understood that one should eat from what is in front of oneself and eat with the right hand. Furthermore, young children should continually be given proper upbringing, and even a stepson (rabib – a child brought up under one’s care) should be nurtured.
