Narrated Abu Huraira: The family of Muhammad did not eat their fill for three successive days till he died.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
In one narration, it is stated that the family of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) never filled their stomachs with wheat bread for three consecutive days.
(Sahih Muslim, Al-Zuhd, Hadith: 7444 (2970))
From this, it is understood that what is negated is not absolute satiety, but rather being satiated with wheat bread for three consecutive days is negated.
The reason for this was most likely the scarcity of food and drink.
At times, it would also happen that food and other provisions were available, but they would give them to others, preferring the needs of others over their own needs.
In one narration, it is stated that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) departed from this world, but he never ate barley bread to his fill.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Al-At‘imah, Hadith: 5414, and Fath al-Bari: 9/643)
