Hadith 5339

Narrated Um Habiba: The Prophet said, "It is not lawful for a Muslim woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for more than three days, except for her husband, for whom she should mourn for four months and ten days."

Hadith Commentary:
1)
In one narration, it is mentioned that after hearing the answer from the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), the woman again said that there was a fear of her eye being damaged.
He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) replied:
“She may not use kohl (surma) even if her eye is lost.”
(Ma‘rifat al-Sahabah by Abu Nu‘aym al-Asbahani, no. 7125)
Asma bint Umays (radi Allahu anha) also gave the same legal verdict (fatwa) in light of this hadith.
However, in the narration of al-Bayhaqi and others, it is mentioned that she may apply kohl (surma) at night and remove it during the day.
(al-Sunan al-Kubra by al-Bayhaqi: 7/440)
This means that if there is no need to apply kohl (surma), then under no circumstances should it be used; if there is a need, then it should be used at night and removed during the day.
In any case, our inclination is that a woman should refrain from applying kohl (surma) during the days of mourning (‘iddah).
(Fath al-Bari: 9/604)
And Allah knows best.
