Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
In other narrations, some details of this narration have been transmitted, namely that during the reign of Walid bin Abdul Malik, Hajjaj bin Yusuf was the governor of Iraq.
When Anas radi Allahu anhu observed his conduct regarding the prayers, he traveled to Damascus to complain about him to the ruler of the time.
Upon arrival, he saw that the ruler himself, Walid bin Abdul Malik, and his other governors were also negligent concerning the prescribed times of prayer. Anas radi Allahu anhu became very distressed and, seeing the deterioration of the situation, began to weep. However, the entire Islamic world was not affected by this conduct of the Umayyad caliphs.
In Madinah Tayyibah, there was adherence to the prescribed times of prayer, because when Anas radi Allahu anhu returned to Madinah Munawwarah from his journey to Syria, he directed the people of Madinah during the prayer to pay attention to the straightening of the rows. Furthermore, the governor there was Umar bin Abdul Aziz rahimahullah, who observed the prescribed times of prayer.
One day, there was a slight delay in the Asr prayer, so Urwah bin Zubair reminded him of the timings of prayer by narrating the hadith of Abu Mas’ud Uqbah bin Amr al-Ansari radi Allahu anhu.
The governor of Madinah, Umar bin Abdul Aziz rahimahullah, accepted this and made corrections accordingly.
From this, it is evident that Anas radi Allahu anhu was satisfied with the people of Madinah regarding the prescribed times of prayer; only in the matter of straightening the rows was there some shortcoming, to which he drew their attention.
