Hadith Commentary:
There is brevity in this hadith.
From detailed narrations, it is understood that the aforementioned statement of Anas radi Allahu anhu pertains to performing the prayers outside of their prescribed times. Thus, Abu Rafi’ says that he heard Anas radi Allahu anhu saying: “I do not find anything preserved from those things which existed during the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.”
Abu Rafi’ said:
“O Abu Hamzah! Is even the prayer not preserved?” Anas radi Allahu anhu replied:
“Do you not know what Hajjaj ibn Yusuf has done to the prayer?” (Musnad Ahmad: 208/3)
Further details of this narration are found in Tabaqat Ibn Sa’d.
Thabit al-Bunani narrates that once we were with Anas radi Allahu anhu when Hajjaj ibn Yusuf delayed the prayer and performed it late.
Anas radi Allahu anhu stood up so that he might admonish him regarding this, but his associates prevented him from speaking.
He left from there, and on the way, expressing his regret to his companions, he said: “Now, nothing from the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is visible, except that outwardly the testimony of faith (shahadatayn) is still professed.”
A man said:
“But the observance of prayer still remains?” He replied:
“You have delayed the Zuhr prayer until the time of Maghrib.
Was the prayer in such a state during the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam?” (Fath al-Bari: 19/2)
