Hadith 5187

Narrated Ibn `Umar: During the lifetime of the Prophet we used to avoid chatting leisurely and freely with our wives lest some Divine inspiration might be revealed concerning us. But when the Prophet had died, we started chatting leisurely and freely (with them).

Chapter of Sahih Bukhari Hadith Number: 5187: «
Relevance between the Chapter Heading and the Hadith:
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah, in the chapter heading, has drawn attention to treating wives with kindness, and under this chapter he has mentioned two ahadith. The relevance of the first hadith, which is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu, is clear. However, in the second hadith, which is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma, there are no explicit words of admonition, due to which, apparently, the relevance between the hadith and the chapter heading is not visible.

Muhammad Zakariya Kandhlawi rahimahullah writes:
“Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has mentioned two ahadith under this chapter. The conformity of the first hadith is clear, while the conformity of the second hadith is unclear.”

Allamah Ayni Hanafi rahimahullah, while discussing the relevance between the chapter heading and the hadith, writes:
“The conformity between the chapter heading and the hadith is not apparent. It is possible (that the conformity is as follows): Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma said, «وانبسطنا» because being open and informal with women is itself related to the chapter of admonitions.”

In reality, the conformity between the hadith and the chapter heading does exist, but how is it in precise terms? It is as follows: Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma said that we used to fear being too informal with our women, meaning that if they behaved informally with their wives, it was possible that such informality could lead to physical altercations. Therefore, in order to avoid reaching that stage, they would act with great caution and would keep their hands safe from any kind of striking. Thus, from here, the relevance between the chapter heading and the hadith is established.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The inevitable result of chatting idly with women is that it often leads to quarrels and even physical altercations, because when one speaks openly with his family members, the husband will have to tolerate their whims and caprices. Sometimes, during such interactions, women are unable to maintain due respect for their husbands, which leads to disobedience, and then the matter escalates to beating and striking.

(2)
From this, it is understood that a person should exercise caution in matters relating to women. He should bear with patience any harm that comes from them and act with forbearance in times of anger and agitation. Even the noble wives (azwaj mutahharat, radi Allahu anhunna) of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would sometimes respond to his words, and at times would leave him for the entire night. According to our inclination, the best conduct with women is to converse with them, but always take into account their intellectual capacity in dealings.
