Hadith 5162

Narrated 'Aisha: that she prepared a lady for a man from the Ansar as his bride and the Prophet said, "O 'Aisha! Haven't you got any amusement (during the marriage ceremony) as the Ansar like amusement?"

Hadith Commentary:

Abu Shaykh narrated from Aisha radi Allahu anha that she went with a bride to the wedding of an orphan girl from among the Ansar. When she returned, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam asked, "What did you say when you went to the groom's family?" I said, "I offered greetings of peace (salam) and gave congratulations (mubarakbad)." The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, "There should have been a slave-girl with you who would beat the duff (frame drum) and sing like this: 'We have come to you, we have come to you, so may we and you be blessed with life. We have come to your place; may this marriage be blessed for you and for us.'"

It is understood from this that, to this extent, reciting such congratulatory verses with the duff (frame drum) is permissible. However, the singing, music, and frivolous entertainment that are adopted in weddings nowadays are by no means permissible, because such practices openly promote immorality and wickedness.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Among the Arabs, it has been an ancient custom that some women adorn and beautify the bride and present her to the groom, offering her congratulations. Islam has also maintained this custom.

(2)
Although there is no mention of congratulations in this hadith, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has alluded to these narrations under this heading. Thus, in one narration, it is mentioned that Aisha radi Allahu anha married off a girl under her guardianship to an Ansari man, and I was among those women who adorned and beautified her and presented her to the groom. When I returned, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam asked:
“What did you do there?” I replied:
“We greeted (with salam) and prayed to Allah for goodness and blessing, and then we returned.”
He said:
“It would have been better if you had taken something for amusement with you, for the Ansar are very fond of such things.”
