Hadith 51

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas: I was informed by Abu Sufyan that Heraclius said to him, "I asked you whether they (followers of Muhammad) were increasing or decreasing. You replied that they were increasing. And in fact, this is the way of true Faith till it is complete in all respects. I further asked you whether there was anybody, who, after embracing his (the Prophets) religion (Islam) became displeased and discarded it. You replied in the negative, and in fact, this is (a sign of) true faith. When its delight enters the heart and mixes with them completely, nobody can be displeased with it."

Hadith Commentary:
1.
This chapter is without a title.
Generally, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has three objectives for this:
(a)
It is related to the previous chapter.
And here, the connection is such that in the previous chapter, the testimony of Jibril alayhis salam was presented regarding the unity of religion, Islam, and faith (iman), and in this chapter, the testimony of the great scholar of the People of the Book and the ruler of the Roman Empire, Heraclius, is narrated, because his second question was whether anyone, out of displeasure with this religion, becomes an apostate.
Then the status of faith (iman) is described, that is, he referred to the religion as faith (iman).
(b)
The intention is to encourage the esteemed readers to themselves establish a title for this hadith; thus, in the previous chapter, it was stated that a believer should never be heedless of his deeds at any time.
Here, this is compensated by stating that when faith (iman) becomes firmly rooted in someone's heart, no power can make him averse to the religion.
Thus, a chapter could be established as:
Chapter: Whomever Allah guides, none can misguide him. Etc.
(c)
The abundance of benefits can also be a reason for omitting a title, meaning that, according to Imam Bukhari rahimahullah, various benefits and headings could be established, so by establishing a single title, it was not restricted.
2.
There is a difference of opinion among the hadith scholars regarding the segmentation (taqti’) of a hadith.
The preferred view is that if by segmenting (i.e., narrating only a portion of the hadith), the meaning is understood and no harm occurs, then it is permissible to do so, as Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has done at this point, because the hadith of Heraclius is very lengthy, and only a portion of it is narrated here.
