Hadith 5074

Narrated Sa`d bin Abi Waqqas: The Prophet prevented `Uthman bin Mazun from that (not marrying), and had he allowed him, we would have got ourselves castrated.

Hadith Commentary:
There is no allowance in Islam for considering celibacy to be superior; rather, the one who shows aversion to marriage (nikah) has been declared outside of the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) Ummah.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In the narration of Tabarani, it is clarified that Uthman bin Maz'un radi Allahu anhu said to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam:
O Messenger of Allah! The life of celibacy is very burdensome for me.
Please grant me permission to be castrated.
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“That is not permissible; rather, you should observe fasting.”
(al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir by Tabarani: 38/9, Hadith number: 8320)
From this, it is understood that Uthman bin Maz'un radi Allahu anhu sought permission from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam to be castrated, which the narrator has expressed as “tabattul” (abstinence from marriage).
His intention was to eliminate the root cause altogether so that “if there is no bamboo, there will be no flute,” because the existence of sexual desire is contrary to tabattul, hence castration (ikhtisa’) is implied.
The purpose of this prohibition is the increase of progeny, lest the number of Muslims decrease and the disbelievers become numerous.
(Fath al-Bari: 149/9)
(2)
In any case, there is no allowance in Islam to consider living a celibate life as superior; rather, the one who shows aversion to marriage has been declared by the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam to be outside of his Ummah.
