Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
Several meanings of this hadith have been mentioned, the details of which are as follows:
➊
Continue to recite the Qur’an as long as your heart remains engaged in its recitation.
When the heart becomes inattentive, then stop, because reciting the Qur’an without presence of heart is extremely inappropriate.
➋
Recite the Noble Qur’an as long as your hearts are united and there is no intention of disagreement or discord.
Then, when disagreement arises,
and the intention of argument and discord appears, then stop reciting the Qur’an.
➌
As long as there is affection among those reciting the Qur’an, continue to recite it.
When disagreement begins to arise, do not quarrel, rather stop reciting the Qur’an.
The disagreement among the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in) was in recitation (qira’at) and dialects (lughat), and they were commanded to abandon such disagreement so that they would not end up denying the mutawatir recitations (qira’at mutawatirah).
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has, further on, narrated the hadith of Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud radi Allahu ta‘ala anhu in support of this meaning, that recitation and dialects should not be made a cause of quarrel, discord, and disagreement.
