Hadith 5060

Narrated `Abdullah: The Prophet said, "Recite (and study) the Qur'an as long as you agree about its interpretation, but if you have any difference of opinion (as regards to its interpretation and meaning) then you should stop reciting it (for the time being).

Hadith Commentary:

This has also been translated as: Recite the Noble Qur'an as long as your hearts are united, and there is no intention of discord or corruption.
Then, when disagreement arises among you and there is an intention of argumentation and discord, then stand up and cease reciting the Qur'an.
How evil it is to let disagreement reach the point of corruption—this is evident from this. If only present-day Muslims would reflect upon this.

Hadith Commentary:
In this hadith, we are warned against discord and made aware of its evil consequences, namely that in its presence, one may be deprived of the recitation of the Noble Qur’an and its blessings. That is, when a doubt arises or there is a risk of disagreement, then at that time, cease the recitation and separate yourself from the Qur’an.

The intent of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is to warn against discord.

It is not intended to prohibit recitation, because there is consensus (ijma‘) of the Ummah on reciting the Noble Qur’an, whether one understands it or not.

This does not mean that reciting the Qur’an during a disagreement is forbidden (haram).

The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has commanded love for the Noble Qur’an, and this necessitates that a person humbles himself before it and makes it the center of his life.

Furthermore, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has warned against discord, because it is a path to destruction and ruin.

Hadith Commentary:
That is, when any doubt arises and a dispute occurs, do not argue; rather, at that time, stop the recitation and separate from each other.
The intent of the noble Companion is to warn against quarreling, not to prohibit recitation, because the recitation itself is not prohibited.
