Narrated Abu Musa: The Prophet said, "Keep on reciting the Qur'an, for, by Him in Whose Hand my life is, Qur'an runs away (is forgotten) faster than camels that are released from their tying ropes."

Hadith Commentary:
➊ Many such memorizers (huffaz) have been seen who turned away from the revision (dawr) and recitation (tilawah) of the Qur’an, and then the Noble Qur’an departed from their hearts.

➋ In this hadith, attributing the forgetting (nisyan) of the Qur’an to oneself is prohibited, because it is Allah Ta’ala who causes one to forget the Qur’an, and He alone decrees everything. Furthermore, forgetfulness (nisyan) is a form of abandonment (tark), so to say “I abandoned” or “I intended to forget” is a blameworthy act. In addition, attributing forgetfulness to oneself is as if one is attributing negligence and heedlessness to oneself, and for this reason it is prohibited.

➌ In any case, attributing forgetfulness (nisyan) to Allah Ta’ala is because He is the Creator of all actions, and attributing it to the human being is permissible on the basis that he is its cause, and it is also attributed to Satan (shaytan) because it is through his whisperings (waswasah) that a person becomes heedless. In any case, a person should continue to recite the Noble Qur’an so that he does not fall prey to forgetfulness.
