Hadith Commentary:
Surah al-Baqarah is the largest surah of the Noble Qur’an.
“Baqarah” means cow.
In this surah, there is mention of a cow belonging to the Children of Israel, which was slaughtered by the command of Musa (alayhis salam) for a specific purpose.
This surah is named after that cow.
In terms of the commands and prohibitions of Islam, this is a very comprehensive surah, for whose virtues even a whole volume would be insufficient.
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah, by mentioning the virtues of its last two verses and Ayat al-Kursi, has alluded to the virtues of the entire surah.
And in this is sufficiency for one who has understanding.
Some scholars have explained the sufficiency of the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah to mean that whoever recites them at bedtime, this recitation will suffice for him in place of standing in prayer at night, and he will receive the reward of tahajjud.
The narration of ‘Uthman ibn Haytham has been connected by Isma’il and Abu Nu’aym.
The incident involving Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu has also been mentioned in the Book of Agency (Kitab al-Wakala).
On the first day, Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu, out of compassion for his humility and poverty, let him go.
He said, “I am a man with a family and in great need.”
The next day, he came again and began stealing dates, so Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu caught him; he pleaded humbly, and Abu Hurayrah let him go.
On the third day, he came again and began stealing, so Abu Hurayrah was strict and apprehended him.
He pleaded greatly, and in the end, he informed Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu of the aforementioned practice (wazifah) of Ayat al-Kursi.
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has brought only this narration regarding the virtue of Surah al-Baqarah, otherwise, there are many other hadiths narrated about the virtue of this surah.
This is the largest surah of the Qur’an, and in terms of its subjects, it is an ocean of treasures. Regarding the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah—﴿آمَنَ الرَّسُولُ بِمَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ رَبِّهِ﴾ etc.—Hafiz (ibn Hajar) says: “So recite them and teach them to your children and women, for they are Qur’an, prayer, and supplication.” (Fath)
That is, recite these verses yourself, teach them to your children and women; these verses are the essence of the Qur’an, they are prayer, and they are supplication.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
Regarding the statement of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that "Shaytan has spoken the truth to you," there could have arisen a misconception about the absolute truthfulness of Shaytan. Therefore, the Prophet negated his truthfulness emphatically, meaning: he has spoken the truth in this particular matter, even though his habit is always to lie. Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has mentioned this incident in detail in the Book of Agency (Hadith 1123).
➋
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam once caught Shaytan in his original form, but then remembered a supplication of Sulayman alayhis salam and let him go. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Salat, Hadith: 461) However, when Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu caught him, Shaytan was in human form, and capturing him in this state was not contrary to the supplication of Sulayman alayhis salam. (Fath al-Bari: 9/72) And Allah knows best.
➌
It should be noted that Imam Bukhari rahimahullah, by mentioning the virtues of the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah and Ayat al-Kursi, has alluded to the virtues of the entire Surah. Indeed, this is a very comprehensive Surah, many of whose virtues are narrated in the books of hadith.
