Narrated Qatada: I asked Anas bin Malik: "Who collected the Qur'an at the time of the Prophet ?" He replied, "Four, all of whom were from the Ansar: Ubai bin Ka`b, Mu`adh bin Jabal, Zaid bin Thabit and Abu Zaid."

Hadith Commentary:
(Hadhrat Anas said this based on his own knowledge. Besides these four, there are also many other eminent Companions who had compiled the Noble Qur’an to the extent of their ability. The intention of Hadhrat Anas is with regard to the entire Qur’an, that only these four individuals had compiled the whole Qur’an.)

Hadith Commentary:

Hazrat Anas radi Allahu anhu said this according to his own knowledge, because besides these four, there were countless other noble Companions radi Allahu anhum ajma'in who, according to the divine ability granted to them, had compiled the Qur'an.
It is also possible that Hazrat Anas radi Allahu anhu intended to mention only those among the Ansar who had compiled the Qur'an, meaning that only four among them had done so.
It is also possible that Hazrat Anas radi Allahu anhu meant the entire Qur'an, i.e., that only these four individuals had compiled the whole Qur'an.
In any case, according to our inclination, this restriction is with respect to the Ansar, that only four among them had compiled the Qur'an; this restriction does not apply to the Muhajirun and other individuals.
And Allah knows best.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah writes that there was a rivalry between the Aws and Khazraj tribes.
When the tribe of Aws mentioned their four distinguished individuals, the tribe of Khazraj presented their four memorizers of the Qur'an, whose mention occurs in this hadith.
