بَابُ الْقُرَّاءِ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:Chapter. (What is said regarding) the Qurra (the reciters of the Quran by heart) from among the Companions of the Prophet.

حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ ، قَالَ : " كُنَّا بِحِمْصَ ، فَقَرَأَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ سُورَةَ يُوسُفَ ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ : مَا هَكَذَا أُنْزِلَتْ ، قَالَ : قَرَأْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّه صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : أَحْسَنْتَ ، وَوَجَدَ مِنْهُ رِيحَ الْخَمْرِ ، فَقَالَ : أَتَجْمَعُ أَنْ تُكَذِّبَ بِكِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَتَشْرَبَ الْخَمْرَ ، فَضَرَبَهُ الْحَدَّ " .
Narrated 'Alqama: While we were in the city of Hims (in Syria), Ibn Mas`ud recited Surat Yusuf. A man said to him), "It was not revealed in this way." Then Ibn Mas`ud said, "I recited it in this way before Allah's Apostle and he confirmed my recitation by saying, 'Well done!' " Ibn Mas`ud detected the smell of wine from the man's mouth, so he said to him, "Aren't you ashamed of telling a lie about Allah's Book and (along with this) you drink alcoholic liquors too?" Then he lashed him according to the law.

Hadith Commentary:
That is, he had it conveyed through the ruler there, and the ruler carried out the prescribed punishment (hadd), because Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu had not been appointed as the governor of Homs; however, he had served as the governor of Kufa for a period of time. The legal opinion (fatwa) of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu is precisely this: if the smell of wine is detected from a person's mouth, then the prescribed punishment (hadd) can be administered to him.

The relevance of this hadith to the chapter heading is as follows: When Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu recited Surah Yusuf, he said:
I recited it before the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and he praised my recitation.

This man did not deny the Noble Qur’an, because denying it would expel a person from the fold of Islam. In fact, there is consensus among the Ummah that if anyone denies even a single letter of the Noble Qur’an, he becomes a disbeliever. This man denied the manner of recitation, because he said:
“It was not revealed in this way.” And from the response of Ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu, it is also clear that he did not deny the Qur’anic surah itself. Accordingly, he replied:
“I recited it in the presence of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and he looked upon my recitation with approval.”
This man said what he did due to ignorance, weak memorization, and lack of certainty, because at that time he was in a state of intoxication.

From this it is established that those who sometimes differ with the people of knowledge are either foolish or in a state of intoxication, so one should take into consideration the condition of the one who is differing. If he is denying the Qur’an and Hadith, then he should be severely rebuked. The one who drinks alcohol will be flogged. Upon observing his condition, the ruler of the time and the judge will decide how many lashes are to be given—40, 80, or less. Drinking alcohol is forbidden (haram). If the matter reaches the court, then it should be decided according to the Qur’an and Hadith, and if the act reaches the level of a prescribed punishment (hadd), then it is obligatory to implement the hadd.
