Hadith 4954

‘Muhammad bin Shihab narrated, Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) informed him, and from him Jabir bin Abdullah Al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that’ the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was mentioning the pause in revelation for a few days. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I was walking when suddenly I heard a voice from the sky. I looked up and saw the same angel (Jibril, peace be upon him) who had come to me in the cave of Hira, sitting on a chair between the sky and the earth. I was greatly frightened by him and returned home and said, “Cover me with a blanket.” So the people of the house covered me with a blanket. Then Allah the Exalted revealed this verse «يا أيها المدثر * قم فأنذر * وربك فكبر * وثيابك فطهر * والرجز فاهجر‏»: “O you who are wrapped up! Arise and warn, and magnify your Lord, and purify your garments.” Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that «الرجز» were the idols of the time of ignorance which they used to worship. The narrator said that after that, the revelation continued regularly.

Hadith Commentary: The esteemed Imam rahimahullah has brought this lengthy hadith here because it contains mention of the first revelation, “Iqra’ bismi rabbika...” (), and the beginning of the Qur’an’s revelation started with this. Incidentally, many other matters are also mentioned in this hadith.

Waraqah bin Nawfal was the paternal cousin of Khadijah radi Allahu anha because Khadijah’s father, Khuwaylid, and Waraqah’s father, Nawfal, were both sons of Asad and thus brothers. Waraqah had become a Christian, but after being influenced by this meeting with the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he embraced faith.

After “Iqra’ bismi rabbika...” (), the next surah to be revealed was “Ya ayyuhal muddaththir.” ()

Hadith Commentary:
1.
In one narration, it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“I was in seclusion in the cave of Hira for a period of time. When I completed that period and descended from the mountain, I heard a voice.
I looked upwards but did not see anything. Then I looked to the left, but did not see anything there either.
I looked in front of me, but saw nothing there as well.
I looked behind me, but did not see anything there either.
Now, when I raised my head upwards, I saw something there.
After that, I came to Khadijah radi Allahu anha and said to her:
‘Cover me with a cloth and pour cold water over me.’ So she covered me with a cloth and poured cold water over me. Then these verses were revealed:
(Sahih Muslim, Al-Iman, Hadith: 409.

2.
After the cessation of revelation, this was the first revelation that was sent down to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
And Allah knows best.
