Hadith 4940

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: (as regards the Verse):--'You shall surely travel from stage to stage (in this life and in the Hereafter).' (It means) from one state to another. That concerns your Prophet.

Hadith Commentary:

That is, for a few days you will remain subdued by the disbelievers, then you will continue to fight them on equal footing. Then you will become dominant, or it refers to all people: first as infants, then as children, then as young adults, then as elders. The explanation of Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma is based on this recitation. When it is read as "latar kabunna" with a fathah on the letter "ba", and the other explanation is according to the well-known recitation, that is, "latar kabunna" with a dammah on the "ba". Ibn Mas'ud said that "latar kabunna" is in the feminine third person singular form, and the pronoun refers to the sky, meaning the sky will change its colors in various ways. (Wahidi)

The Qur'anic verse, in terms of its generality, contains many profound meanings. It can also include the present advanced era, which mankind has attained after passing through many stages, and only Allah knows best what other eras are yet to come in the future. The inventions of today have granted mankind such hidden treasures of the universe that it was necessary for the Noble Qur'an to allude to all of them. For this, the verse can be presented. This indicates the reality that the Noble Qur'an is such a divine revelation that will continue to guide mankind in every age and every era, and will lead him to ever greater advancements, so that in the true sense, man may become the vicegerent (khalifah) of Allah, discover the secrets of power, populate this universe in a manner befitting it, and fulfill the duties of his vicegerency.

It is true:
لَتَرْكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَنْ طَبَقٍ
Allah the Blessed and Exalted has spoken the truth.

Hadith Commentary:
The original meaning of "ṭabaq" is intensity; here, it refers to the hardships that will occur on the Day of Resurrection, meaning that on that day you will have to pass through afflictions and sufferings.
This same system operates in the world as well: a person travels step by step, stage by stage, on his journey. Similarly, after death, a person will also be compelled to pass through several stages.
He will have to face either the punishment of the grave or the reward of the grave.
In the same way, he will ultimately reach his final destination—Paradise or Hell. In traversing these stages, he is compelled;
his own choice has no role in this.
And Allah knows best.
