بَابُ قَوْلِهِ: {كَأَنَّهُ جِمَالاَتٌ صُفْرٌ} :Chapter. The Statement of Allah: “As if they were yellow camels or bundles of ropes.” (V.77:33)

حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَابِسٍ ، سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا تَرْمِي بِشَرَرٍ كَالْقَصَرِ ، قَالَ : " كُنَّا نَعْمِدُ إِلَى الْخَشَبَةِ ثَلَاثَةَ أَذْرُعٍ أَوْ فَوْقَ ذَلِكَ ، فَنَرْفَعُهُ لِلشِّتَاءِ ، فَنُسَمِّيهِ الْقَصَرَ ، كَأَنَّهُ جِمَالَاتٌ صُفْرٌ حِبَالُ السُّفُنِ ، تُجْمَعُ حَتَّى تَكُونَ كَأَوْسَاطِ الرِّجَالِ " .
'Amr bin 'Ali narrated to us, he said: Yahya narrated to us, he said: Sufyan informed us, from 'Abdur Rahman bin 'Abis, and he heard from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) regarding the verse «ترمي بشرر كالقصر». He said: We used to pick up sticks three arm-lengths long or even longer and keep them for winter. We used to call such sticks «قصر.», and «كأنه جمالات صفر» refers to the ropes of a boat which are joined together until they become as thick as a man's waist.

Hadith Commentary:

In the noble verse, "jamalat" has been recited in two ways:
One, with a kasrah (i.e., the vowel "i") under the letter "jeem," which is the plural of "jamal."
Its meaning is: camels.
In this case, the meaning of the noble verse would be that when great sparks rise and spread, flying in all directions, it will seem as if yellow and black camels are leaping and jumping about.
2.
It has also been recited with a dhammah (i.e., the vowel "u") on the letter "jeem."
In this case, the meaning would be: large ropes with which ships are tied. When those great sparks burst forth, it will appear in the atmosphere as if long yellow ropes are flying.
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has given preference to this meaning, because he has not paid any attention to the other meaning.
And Allah knows best.
