Hadith Commentary:
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) made honey unlawful for himself in order to please his noble wives, the details of which will come in the following hadith. If such an action is done out of necessity or for a beneficial purpose, it is permissible and not sinful. However, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had no such necessity, because he did this to please his noble wives (radi Allahu anhunna ajma'in), whereas in such matters, pleasing them was not obligatory upon him. Therefore, Allah the Exalted said:
You must give the expiation for this oath, and the expiation for an oath is:
Feeding ten needy people with food of average quality, or clothing them, or freeing a male or female slave.
If one is unable to do any of these, then he must fast for three days.
