حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحِيمِ ، حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : وَأَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، أَنَّ الْحَسَنَ بْنَ مُسْلِمٍ أَخْبَرَهُ ، عَنْ طَاوُسٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا ، قَالَ : " شَهِدْتُ الصَّلَاةَ يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَ عُمَرَ وَ عُثْمَانَ ، فَكُلُّهُمْ يُصَلِّيهَا قَبْلَ الْخُطْبَةِ ، ثُمَّ يَخْطُبُ بَعْدُ ، فَنَزَلَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَكَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ حِينَ يُجَلِّسُ الرِّجَالَ بِيَدِهِ ، ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ يَشُقُّهُمْ حَتَّى أَتَى النِّسَاءَ مَعَ بِلَالٍ ، فَقَالَ : يَأَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ إِذَا جَاءَكَ الْمُؤْمِنَاتُ يُبَايِعْنَكَ عَلَى أَنْ لا يُشْرِكْنَ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا وَلا يَسْرِقْنَ وَلا يَزْنِينَ وَلا يَقْتُلْنَ أَوْلادَهُنَّ وَلا يَأْتِينَ بِبُهْتَانٍ يَفْتَرِينَهُ بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِنَّ وَأَرْجُلِهِنَّ سورة الممتحنة آية 12 حَتَّى فَرَغَ مِنَ الْآيَةِ كُلِّهَا ، ثُمَّ قَالَ حِينَ فَرَغَ أَنْتُنَّ عَلَى ذَلِكَ ، فَقَالَتِ امْرَأَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ لَمْ يُجِبْهُ غَيْرُهَا : نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، لَا يَدْرِي الْحَسَنُ مَنْ هِيَ ، قَالَ : فَتَصَدَّقْنَ وَبَسَطَ بِلَالٌ ثَوْبَهُ ، فَجَعَلْنَ يُلْقِينَ الْفَتَخَ وَالْخَوَاتِيمَ فِي ثَوْبِ بِلَالٍ " .
Narrated Ibn `Abbas: I witnessed the `Id-al-Fitr prayer with Allah's Messenger , Abu Bakr, `Umar and `Uthman; and all of them offered it before delivering the sermon... and then delivered the sermon. Once the Prophet (after completing the prayer and the sermon) came down, as if I am now looking at him waving at the men with his hand to sit down, and walked through them till he, along with Bilal, reached (the rows of) the women. Then he recited: 'O Prophet! When believing women come to you to take the oath of allegiance that they will not worship anything other than Allah, will not steal, will not commit illegal sexual intercourse, will not kill their children, and will not utter slander, intentionally forging falsehood (by making illegal children belonging to their husbands)'....(60.12) Having finished, he said, 'Do you agree to that?" One lady, other than whom none replied the Prophet said, "Yes, O Allah's Messenger !" (The, sub-narrator, Al-Hasan did not know who the lady was.) Then the Prophet said to them: "Will you give alms?" Thereupon Bilal spread out his garment and the women started throwing big rings and small rings into Bilal's garment. (See Hadith No. 95 vol.2)

The crimes mentioned in this noble verse were commonly practiced in Arab society. For example, there were several forms of child-killing among the Arabs: due to shame and dishonor, girls would be buried alive.
Similarly, due to poverty and hunger, they would also put their children to death.

It should be noted that this also includes abortion (isqat haml), whether it is the abortion of a legitimate pregnancy or the termination of an illegitimate one.

Likewise, there were several forms of fabricating slander, for example:
If a woman accuses another woman of having relations with a non-mahram man, which is called false accusation (tuhmah); secondly, if a child is actually fathered by another man but the wife convinces her husband that it is his; thirdly, if someone takes another woman's child and, through deceit and trickery, attributes it to himself.
It is narrated in traditions that after this covenant and pledge, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would say:
"To the extent that you are able and it is possible for you."
The women replied:
"Allah and His Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) are more merciful to us than we are to ourselves."
