Hadith 4889

The meaning of «الخصاصة» is hunger. «المفلحون» means those who are always successful. «الفلاح» means to remain. «حي على الفلاح» means hasten towards permanence, that is, towards the deed by which eternal life is attained. And Imam Hasan al-Basri said that in «لا يجيدون في صدورهم», in «حاجة», by «حاجت» is meant «حسد».
Narrated Abu Huraira: A man came to Allah's Messenger and said, "O Allah's Messenger ! I am suffering from fatigue and hunger." The Prophet sent (somebody) to his wives (to get something), but the messenger found nothing with them. Then Allah's Messenger said (to his companions). "Isn't there anybody who can entertain this man tonight so that Allah may be merciful to him?" An Ansari man got up and said, "I (will, entertain him), O Allah's Messenger !" So he went to his wife and said to her, "This is the guest of Allah's Messenger , so do not keep anything away from him." She said. "By Allah, I have nothing but the children's food." He said, "When the children ask for their dinner, put them to bed and put out the light; we shall not take our meals tonight," She did so. In the morning the Ansari man went to Allah's Messenger who said, "Allah was pleased with (or He bestowed His Mercy) on so-and-so and his wife (because of their good deed)." Then Allah revealed: 'But give them preference over themselves even though they were in need of that.' (59.9)

Hadith Commentary:
In this hadith, two attributes—amazement (taʿajjub) and laughter (dahk)—are mentioned for Allah, and this is the truth. To discuss their modality (kayfiyyah) is an innovation (bid‘ah), and it is obligatory to have faith in them as they are apparent.
It is necessary to affirm the divine attributes (sifat ilahiyyah) without interpretation (ta’wil).
This is the method of the pious predecessors (salaf salihin).
The safety of faith lies only in following the way of the salaf, and nothing more.

Hadith Commentary:
The selflessness and compassion of the Ansar for the Muhajirun was eternal, exceptional, and unparalleled.
A beautiful incident related to this is also recorded as follows:
Hazrat Anas radi Allahu anhu narrates that when Abdur Rahman bin Awf radi Allahu anhu arrived in Madinah Tayyibah, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam established brotherhood between him and Sa’d bin Rabi’ radi Allahu anhu.
Hazrat Sa’d radi Allahu anhu was very wealthy.
He said to Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Awf radi Allahu anhu:
“The Ansar know that I am the wealthiest among them. Now I wish to divide half of my wealth between myself and you, and I have two wives; whichever of them you like, I will divorce her.
After her waiting period (‘iddah) is over, you may marry her.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Manaqib al-Ansar, Hadith: 3781)
Does such selflessness exist anywhere else in the history of the world?!

Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
(1)
‘Awaatiq:
This is the plural of ‘aatiq, and refers to those women who are adults, or near adulthood, or are of marriageable age, or are considered honorable by their family, or who have already experienced the hardship of leaving the house for work.

(2)
Dhawaati al-khudur,
Khudur is the plural of khidr.
Those who remain veiled within the house.

Benefits and Issues:
From this hadith, it is understood that all women should go out for the two Eids, even menstruating women (ha’idh) who cannot perform the prayer; they too should be present, but remain apart from the prayer area despite participating with the people in the Eid gathering. This is so that the prayer rows are not broken, nor should they cause inconvenience to other women. However, they should not go adorned or made up. Yet, it is strange that the Hanafi scholars say that due to the changing circumstances of today and because women go out adorned, it is not permissible for them to attend Jumu‘ah or Eid prayers, even though the risks on these occasions are less, and in ordinary circumstances, going to public places is more dangerous, yet they do not prohibit that. Women go everywhere, adorned and inviting attention, coming and going freely. But they are deprived of these acts of goodness and charity.
