وَقَالَ مُجَاهِدٌ : جَعَلَكُمْ مُسْتَخْلَفِينَ : مُعَمَّرِينَ فِيهِ ، مِنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ إِلَى النُّورِ ، مِنَ الضَّلَالَةِ إِلَى الْهُدَى : فِيهِ بَأْسٌ شَدِيدٌ ، وَمَنَافِعُ لِلنَّاسِ : جُنَّةٌ وَسِلَاحٌ ، مَوْلَاكُمْ أَوْلَى بِكُمْ لِئَلَّا يَعْلَمَ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ ، لِيَعْلَمَ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ ، يُقَالُ : الظَّاهِرُ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ عِلْمًا ، وَالْبَاطِنُ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ عِلْمًا ، أَنْظِرُونَا : انْتَظِرُونَا .
Mujahid said «جعلكم مستخلفين فيه» means He settled you on the earth, made you successors, and populated it. «من الظلمات إلى النور» means from misguidance to guidance. «ومنافع للناس» means you make shields and weapons from iron, etc. «مولاكم» means the Fire is more deserving for you. «لئلا يعلم أهل الكتاب» so that the People of the Book may know («الا» is extra). «الظاهر» according to knowledge. «الباطن» according to knowledge. «أنظرونا» (with the hamza open and the zaa with kasrah is one recitation) means: Wait for us.
وَقَالَ مُجَاهِدٌ : يُحَادُّونَ : يُشَاقُّونَ اللَّهَ ، كُبِتُوا : أُخْزُوا مِنَ الْخِزْيِ ، اسْتَحْوَذَ : غَلَبَ.
Mujahid said: «يحادون الله» means "they oppose Allah." «كبتوا» means "they were humiliated." «استحوذ» means "he became dominant."

الْجَلاَءَ: الإِخْرَاجُ مِنْ أَرْضٍ إِلَى أَرْضٍ.
The meaning of the word «الجلاء» is to expel from one land to another land, which is called exile.
Narrated Sa`id bin Jubair: I asked Ibn `Abbas about Surat Al-Tauba, and he said, "Surat Al-Tauba? It is exposure (of all the evils of the infidels and the hypocrites). And it continued revealing (that the oft-repeated expression): '...and of them ...and of them.' till they started thinking that none would be left unmentioned therein." I said, "What about) Surat Al-Anfal?" He replied, "Surat Al-Anfal was revealed in connection with the Badr Battle." I said, "(What about) Surat Al-Hashr?" He replied, "It was revealed in connection with Bani an-Nadir."
