Hadith Commentary:
Third Station:
The third station is mentioned by the name of Ruwaythah.
This is the name of a settlement which is at a distance of 17 farsakhs, that is, 51 miles from Madinah Tayyibah.
(Fath al-Bari: 1/737)
Where did the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) perform prayer at this station? According to the statement of Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu), the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would descend beneath a large tree there.
That tree has broken from the top, but if not, it has bent and settled within its hollow and shell, and its trunk stands fully upright.
Beneath this trunk are mounds of sand, but that tree, which had already broken in the time of Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu), how many days could it have remained! Now, to search for this place and determine it is impossible.
And Allah knows best.
