Hadith Commentary:
In the noble verse ﴿لَقَدْ رَأَى مِنْ آيَاتِ رَبِّهِ الْكُبْرَى﴾ (an-Najm: 18), the word "ayat" (signs) is in the plural, from which it is understood that on the night of Mi'raj, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam witnessed many wonders of divine power, the details of which, in their entirety, are best known to Allah alone. Here, in the narration, one sign is mentioned, namely the "rafraf." Some people have said that by "rafraf" is meant a veil; others have said that it refers to a piece of cloth, meaning that Jibril (Gabriel) was wearing a green garment.

It is narrated from Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma that on the night of Mi'raj, the rafraf descended, and the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam sat upon it; then the rafraf remained, and he drew near to his Lord. This is what is meant by "Then he drew near and came down" (ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّى).

The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam says that at this station, Jibril separated from me, all voices ceased, and I heard the speech of my Lord.

This has been transmitted by Qurtubi.

(Wahidi)

The Sidrat al-Muntaha and the luminous and fiery scenes that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam observed on the night of Mi'raj are all included in the interpretation of this verse.

Hadith Commentary:

From the first hadith, it is understood that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) saw Jibril (alayhis salam), whereas in this hadith it is mentioned that you saw a green carpet. The reconciliation between these is that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) saw Jibril (alayhis salam) himself, but he was on a green carpet, wearing a green silk garment, as is mentioned in the hadith.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) saw Jibril (alayhis salam), who was adorned in a green silk garment and had covered the space between the earth and the sky.
(Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, Tafsir al-Qur’an, Hadith: 3283)

In addition to Jibril (alayhis salam), the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was also shown some scenes of Paradise and Hellfire; as for the details of the other great signs, Allah Ta‘ala alone knows best.
