Hadith 4849

Narrated Abu Huraira: (that the Prophet said) "It will be said to the Hell, 'Are you filled?' It will say, 'Are there any more (to come)?' On that Allah will put His Foot on it, and it will say 'Qati! Qati! (Enough! Enough!).

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary: Qastallani, following the earlier mutakallimun (theologians), has made an interpretation (ta’wil) at this point and said that by “placing the foot” is meant “to abase it” or that the foot of some creature is intended.
The Ahl al-Hadith do not make such interpretations; rather, they affirm “foot” (qadam) and “leg” (rijl) just as they affirm “hearing” (sam‘), “sight” (basar), “eye” (‘ayn), “face” (wajh), etc. Ibn Furak, out of ignorance, denied “leg” (rijl) and said that the word “leg” is not established, even though in the narration of the two Sahihs (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim) the word “leg” is also present.
These ahadith are the bane of the Jahmiyyah, while the Ahl al-Hadith gain renewed life from them.
(Wahidi)
And Muhyi al-Sunnah said: The “foot” (qadam) and “leg” (rijl) in this hadith are among the attributes of Allah Ta‘ala, so having faith in them is obligatory, and refraining from delving into them is necessary. Thus, the one who follows the path of submission in this matter is rightly guided, the one who delves into it is deviated, the one who denies it is a negator, and the one who seeks to specify its modality is an anthropomorphist. There is nothing like unto Him. (Bukhari Commentary)

Hadith Commentary:

In the Noble Qur’an it is stated:
“Surely, I will fill Hell with jinn and mankind all together.” (As-Sajda: 13)
When this promise is fulfilled and Allah Ta’ala casts the disbelieving jinn and humans into Hell, He will ask Hell:
“Are you full?” It will reply:
“Is there any more?” That is, there is still room in my embrace for Your enemies.
Allah Ta’ala’s conversation with Hell and Hell’s response is by no means beyond Allah’s power.
From this question and answer, two things are understood:
First, that Hell will be so vast and spacious that all the inhabitants of Hell will be cast into it, yet there will still be room for more. Second, that on that Day, Hell will be so inflamed with rage and fury that it will reply:
“Bring all those who deserve to enter me; today I will leave no one behind.”

Some people interpret “qadam” (foot) here to mean humiliation or the foot of some creature, but we, Ahl al-Sunnah, do not interpret it in any way. Rather, we affirm “qadam” (foot) and “rijl” (leg) just as we affirm hearing (sam‘), sight (basr), eye (‘ayn), and face (wajh).
