Hadith 4845

Mujahid said that the meaning of «لا تقدموا‏» is that you should not speak ahead of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). (Rather, listen to «قال الله وقال الرسول» with respect) until Allah conveys the command He wishes to give through His Messenger. The meaning of «امتحن‏» is clarified, examined. The meaning of «لا تنابزوا‏ بالالقاب» is that after becoming a Muslim, do not call him a disbeliever, Jew, or Christian. «لا يلتكم‏» will not decrease your reward at all. In Surah At-Tur, «وما ألتنا» means that We did not decrease the reward of their deeds at all.
Do you know the meaning of «تشعرون»? From it the word «شاعر» is derived, meaning "the one who knows."
Narrated Ibn Abi Mulaika: The two righteous persons were about to be ruined. They were Abu Bakr and `Umar who raised their voices in the presence of the Prophet when a mission from Bani Tamim came to him. One of the two recommended Al-Aqra' bin Habeas, the brother of Bani Mujashi (to be their governor) while the other recommended somebody else. (Nafi`, the sub-narrator said, I do not remember his name). Abu Bakr said to `Umar, "You wanted nothing but to oppose me!" `Umar said, "I did not intend to oppose you." Their voices grew loud in that argument, so Allah revealed: 'O you who believe! Raise not your voices above the voice of the Prophet.' (49.2) Ibn Az-Zubair said, "Since the revelation of this Verse, `Umar used to speak in such a low tone that the Prophet had to ask him to repeat his statements." But Ibn Az-Zubair did not mention the same about his (maternal) grandfather (i.e. Abu Bakr).

Hadith Commentary:

In the 9th year of Hijrah, a delegation from Banu Tamim came to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and requested that he appoint a leader for them.
While the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) remained silent, Umar (radi Allahu anhu) suggested appointing Aqra’ ibn Habis, and Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) suggested making Qa’qa’ ibn Ma’bad the leader.
During this, the voices of both companions were raised, so the aforementioned verse was revealed.

In one narration, it is mentioned that after the revelation of the verse, whenever Umar (radi Allahu anhu) spoke to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he would speak as if confiding a secret.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would need to ask him to repeat himself.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Al-I‘tisam bil-Kitab wa al-Sunnah, Hadith: 7302)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has written regarding Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) that he said:
“O Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)! I have sworn an oath that from now on I will speak to you only as one confiding a secret.”
(Fath al-Bari: 8/752)

Hadith Commentary:
The relevance of this hadith to the chapter is that it mentions disputing, because Abu Bakr and Umar (radi Allahu anhuma) were both disputing in the matter of succession, that is, regarding who should be appointed as the ruler. This was a matter of knowledge.

Hadith Commentary:
The chapter heading established by Imam Bukhari rahimahullah consists of several components. One of these is “arguing without cause.” Thus, the dispute and difference between Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu and Umar radi Allahu anhu mentioned in the hadith occurred in the presence of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, when Umar al-Faruq radi Allahu anhu suggested appointing Aqra’ ibn Habis as leader, and Abu Bakr al-Siddiq radi Allahu anhu said that Qa’qa’ ibn Ma’bad should be made leader.

During this, the voices of these two noble Companions were raised, so the Angel of Revelation came to the service of the Prophet, and verses were revealed from Allah, stating that in the presence of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, no one is permitted to offer advice on their own initiative, nor is it correct to speak in a raised voice before him sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

In any case, this hadith corresponds to its chapter heading in that it mentions a dispute, because Abu Bakr al-Siddiq radi Allahu anhu and Umar al-Faruq radi Allahu anhu were arguing over whether Aqra’ ibn Habis or Qa’qa’ ibn Ma’bad ibn Zurara should be appointed as leader.
